Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • March 16, 2011 The Ridgewood Education Foundation recently presented the board of education with nine new classroom grants for eight Ridgewood schools totaling $11,650. “The board of trustees was excited to fund some very creative ideas, including a greenhouse and a writing program for all of Willard School. We were also pleased to see grants that have been successful at one school adopted by another,” commented Foundation President Elizabeth Gordon. Descriptions of the grants follow: Willard School’s “What’s Your Story 4-29-09 karen/janine Day” will involve creative writing and drama, using the Story Pirates Program EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) to integrate theater into standards based 3 x .75 language arts lessons. The requested amount was $1,000 and the author was Donald Friel, a second grade teacher at Willard Elementary School. The project will include the entire school, kindergarten through grade five, and is scheduled to take place one day: April 28. The program will consist of writing workshops bookended by an all-school assembly. The Willard Panther Network (WPN) received grant money to purchase two Canon Camcorders for $760. Danielle Connor, a teacher at Willard Elementary, proposed the project, which will involve the entire student body, but will mostly be utilized by the fourth and fifth grade students who participate in the WPN program. Students will be involved in video production, editing, and graphics Education foundation funds grants for local schools design. The students will also learn to use programs such as iMovie, Keynote, and Garage Band. “Little Miss Sunshine: A Character Study” is a grant from the Somerville Elementary School that will provide books for a four-week study of characterization in the books that they read. This program will be used primarily by the special education teachers and their students. The requested amount is $802, and the grant authors are Susan Chambre, Christine Meltzer, Shiva Khaloyan, and Pat Weeks. The project will take place during the month of October and will involve resource center, supplemental instruction/BSI students in grades two through five. Students will learn how to understand characters and their motivations, and to look at how authors reveal character traits. Different titles will be used in the Mr. Men/Little Miss series of books by Roger Hargreaves. Travell Guided Reading Book Room will enrich the first grade reading program. This project will support at-risk readers. Specific books will be purchased to achieve this goal by providing small group instruction for guided reading. This grant is similar to one given last fall to Somerville. The cost is $1,610. Ridge School will receive $1599 for “A Smart Solution to Assessment.” This grant will benefit students in kindergarten through grade five. The purchase of a school set of responders for the Smart Board technology already in place will leverage the use of this new technology. The responders allow a more individual approach to teaching with the Smart Boards. The grant was presented by Principal Jean Schoenlank. Ridgewood High School students will benefit from the “Writing in the 21st Century” grant of $1,500. Patricia Hans requested funding for printing the award-winning literary magazine, “Genesis.” Student staff will work on the publication, and all students may submit work to be considered for inclusion in the magazine. Ridge School was awarded a grant for the purchase of Music Ace Maestro at a cost of $1,875. The purchase of this software will provide another method to help students learn to read music. Each student will work at his or her own pace. Emmanuel asks... Can You Help? Ridgewood Annie Porcorelli is the teacher who will use this new software. Parking ordinance introduced The Ridgewood Village Council has introduced an ordinance to provide for safer road conditions on North Irving Street. The measure will be considered for adoption on April 13. If approved as introduced, the ordinance would mandate no stopping or standing on the west side of North Irving Street from East Ridgewood Avenue north to Overbrook Road. The ordinance aims to prevent parents from dropping off youngsters who might run out between parked cars into the path of motorists. J. KOSTER Editor’s Note: This article updates one that ran on March 9, which incorrectly stated that the ordinance would target South Irving. L AST CALL!
