Village council nixes $4.25 million water meter plan
by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council defeated the Ridgewood Water Company’s proposed $4.25 million bond ordinance that would have allowed for comprehensive installation of radio-read water meters in all homes in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff. The council’s 5-0 vote to defeat the ordinance was seconded by speakers from the audience, who agreed with Mayor Keith Killion and the council that undertaking a project of this size in the middle of an economic crisis was bad timing, even if the plan was a commendable effort to produce accurate water bills for all 20,000 customer households in the four towns. “Just because we disagree, I don’t think we don’t respect the tremendous amount of time and work the water department put in,” said Mayor Killion. “It was a good plan, but we felt it wasn’t the right plan.” Councilman Paul Aronsohn pointed out that nothing today becomes outmoded out faster than the latest technology, and that spending that kind of money for meter-
ing services when so many residents were financially strapped was not good timing. “I am in concurrence with the council that this is too much money to spend at this time,” said Roger Weigand, a resident who often speaks at council meetings. Boyd Loving, another resident who regularly attends council sessions, added, “I whole-heartedly concur. Economic conditions are tight…bonding $4.25 million just isn’t a good idea. It makes for good customer relations, but we just can’t afford to do it at this time.” The rejection of the proposal came as (continued on page 14)
