Borough to settle: Motorola wins $2 million reduction
The Glen Rock Borough Council has agreed to settle a tax appeal in which Motorola, one of the borough’s major industrial ratables, saved itself $2,004,600 by appealing tax bills for 2008, 2009, and 2010. Glen Rock Tax Assessor Steve Rubenstein recommended that the borough settle a pending litigation before the Tax Court of New Jersey after examining the property record card and physically visiting the site, which is located in Glen Rock’s small light industrial zone near the Hawthorne border. The resolution recently approved by the Glen Rock Borough Council accepted a reduction of the assessment of $5,759,400 for the Motorola property for 2008 to $4,500,000 to be actually paid, a reduction of $1,559,400 for that year. The settlement for 2009 reduced the original assessment of $4,872,600 to an actual payment of $3,500,000, a reduction of $392,600. The reduction for 2010 was exactly the same amount: $3,500,000. The total amount Motorola saved by the negotiation was $2,004,600. The governing body authorized payment to Motorola within 60 days of the council vote. J. KOSTER
The Glen Rock Borough Council has authorized spring bargain prices on some, but not all, of the municipal swimming pool badges for 2011, if residents purchase the badges before May 16. At the Feb. 23 public meeting, the council approved bargains on many of the fees for summer-long use of the municipal pool complex. Family memberships offer a sub-

stantial savings: $340 before May 16 and $380 after. Non-resident care givers may save $15 if they buy before May 16, when the fee is $120. After that time, the fee will be $135. People who buy badges for children under the age of five stand to save $5 for a summer membership, which will now cost $35 before May 16 and $40 after that date. Savings of $10 are available for teen memberships ($60 before May 16, $70 after), and for adult memberships for residents ages 18 to 61 ($100 before May 16, $110 after). The savings on discounted senior membership will be $5; membership for adults 62 years of age and over will be $20 before May 16 and $25 afterwards. Daily and guest book fees reflect no savings: a daily fee with a $20 resident card is $10, a 10-trip adult guest book is $80, and a 10-trip child or senior book is $40, without
regard to date of purchase. The Glen Rock Pool complex is widely esteemed for its excellent water quality. Council members have committed themselves to a reasonable balance between providing a much-respected public service and trying to subsidize at least some of the cost for fully-employed people and their families, while giving a break to seniors on fixed incomes.
