Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • March 9, 2010 Ridgewood Council considering South Irving parking regulations by John Koster After fielding calls from concerned residents, the Ridgewood Village Council heard from Village Engineer Christopher Rutishauser, and is now considering a plan to prevent possible mishaps on South Irving Street in the vicinity of the high school and the newly illuminated sports field. Tentative plans to address the problem of young athletes who run across South Irving Street at times when the road is poorly lit would have to come in the form of a new ordinance. As yet, no proposed ordinance has been drafted. “What we’ve been trying to do in the village is to change attitudes,” Mayor Keith Killion said at the last public meeting. “There’s no easy answer for this. We may have to have enforcement on this.” After conferring with Rutishauser and hearing from neighbors, Mayor Killion suggested that a new ordinance prevent residents from using the road as a drop-off for night games at the high school field. The suggestion was to ban all parking on the northbound side of South Irving Street – which would tacitly permit motorists to pause to drop off pedestrians -- and to institute a “no stopping or standing” regulation on the southbound side of the road. Deputy Mayor Thomas Riche also urged that parents who are parking their vehicles prior to athletic events be dissuaded from parking in the lot behind Village Hall and the Ridgewood Library, and directed to the South Graydon parking lot. Parking for athletic events sometimes blocks so many spaces in the library lot that even the library staff members have difficulty finding room for their cars, and patrons are left to circle the lot in the hope that someone will vacate a parking space. In other business, Mayor Killion and Deputy Mayor Riche both noted their dislike of the new solar panels being installed on Public Service Gas & Electric utility poles. Riche called the solar panels “hideous” and urged that if the panels could not be dispensed with entirely, they be placed as high up on the poles as possible so as not to distract motorists. The Ridgewood Public Library has instituted its new policy of reserving and charging a fee for space for tutoring and public gatherings at the library in an effort to keep library functions accessible to Ridgewood residents without disrupting academic assistance and informational programs available to area residents. Tutors may teach in the Private Business Center adjacent to the periodical and DVD racks on the first floor beyond the entrance to the children’s room. Tutors will pay $10 for a full day or $50 for a full month. Official agencies of Ridgewood’s municipal government and the Ridgewood school system may use spaces for no fee, subject to availability.
