March 9, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Ridgewood Council expresses tentative interest in cell tower by John Koster The Ridgewood Council indicated tentative interest in allowing construction of a 140-foot cellular tower at the main firehouse on Glen Avenue -- particularly when Village Manager Kenneth Gabbert estimated that two to five cell carriers might want to lease space from Ridgewood at $30,000 to $35,000 a year each. The tower and a generator would be funded by the initial commercial carrier, who was not named at last week’s work session. Plans call for the top level of the tower to be reserved for Ridgewood’s municipal emergency communications needs. Mayor Killion, taking the pulse of the council, agreed that Village Engineer Christopher Rutishauser should be asked to examine the tentative proposal in detail and that the Ridgewood Planning Board should have a look at the plans before the council makes any formal decision. The council, however, was not ready to move forward with a plan to install radio-read water meters, even with a method that would be less financially intrusive than the $4 million bonding plan rejected the week before. “I can only think of one compelling reason (for the meters),” Mayor Keith Killion said. “I think the users are entitled to an accurate bill. I know I would like an accurate bill. How we go about it is another story.” The council members were non-committal about the tentative revised plan by Ridgewood Water Company Director Frank Moritz to extend the funding of a radioread water metering system over a longer period of time. The previous plan called for bonding $4 million to cover radio meter links for 20,000 customers in Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Wyckoff. Gabbert supported the updated proposal, which he said would cost each customer only about $25 a year for more accurate water meter readings. Council members were still skeptical, even when Moritz explained that 6,000 of the 20,000 households in the Ridgewood Water Company network had only estimates of their water bills. “As I understand it, the estimates are generally right, and people can call up and get their meters read,” Councilman Paul Aronsohn told Moritz. “When you go out and read the meter, it doesn’t cost us $4 million.
