Spring movie releases to include remake of ‘Arthur’
by Dennis Seuling As we emerge from a winter of shoveling snow, cabin fever, more snow, and ice dams on the roof, it’s time to look ahead to spring movies. There’s nothing like a comedy to perk up one’s spirits, and there are quite a few among this spring’s releases. “Arthur” (to be released on April 8) is a remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore film. Russell Brand reinvents the role of lovable billionaire Arthur Bach, an irresponsible charmer who has always relied on two things to keep him out of trouble: his unlimited fortune and the good sense of lifelong nanny Hobson (Helen Mirren). Now he faces the challenge of choosing between an arranged marriage to ambitious corporate executive Susan (Jennifer Garner) that will ensure his lavish lifestyle, or an uncertain future with the one thing money can’t buy, Naomi (Greta Gerwig), the woman he loves. With Naomi’s inspiration and some unconventional help from Hobson, the one person who has always believed in him, Arthur will take the biggest risk of his life and learn what it means to be a man. Luis Guzman and Nick “Bridesmaids” (May 13) combines the talents of producer Judd Apatow (“Knocked Up,” “Superbad”), director Paul Feig (creator of “Freaks and Geeks”), and two “Saturday Night Live” comediennes. Kristen Wiig stars as Anne, a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudoph), and a group of colorful bridesmaids on a wild ride down the road to matrimony. Though lovelorn and broke, Anne bluffs her way through the expensive and often bizarre rituals. “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (May 20) is the fourth installment of the highly popular Disney franchise -- this time in 3-D -- starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. When Jack crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love or if she is a ruthless con artist who is using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. She forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), and Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure. The cast includes Geoffrey Rush as vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade, Joshamee Gibbs. “The Hangover, Part II” (May 26) is the follow-up to the record-breaking hit comedy “The Hangover.” This time around, Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Alan (Zach Galifianakis), and Doug (Justin Bartha) travel to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas that is the subject of the first “Hangover,” Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things do not always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok produces a whole new series of comic situations. “Bad Teacher” (June 24) stars Cameron Diaz as foulmouthed, inappropriate, ruthless teacher Elizabeth, who drinks heavily, gets high, and looks forward to the day she will meet the man who will get her out of the job she hates. Having been dumped by her fiancé, she concocts a plan to win over a rich, handsome substitute (Justin Timberlake), competing for his affection with overly aggressive colleague Amy (Lucy Punch). When Elizabeth also finds herself fending off the advances of a sarcastic gym teacher (Jason Segel), the consequences of her outrageous schemes involve her students and coworkers and immerse her in a series of comic misadventures.

Nolte co-star. “Something Borrowed” (set for May 6 release) finds Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin), a talented attorney at a top New York law firm and a generous and loyal friend, unhappily still single, as her engaged best friend, Darcy (Kate Hudson), constantly reminds her. After celebrating her 30th birthday, perpetual good girl Rachel unexpectedly ends up in bed with the guy she’s had a crush on since law school, Dex (Colin Egglesfield), who just happens to be Darcy’s fiancé. When Rachel and Darcy’s lifelong friendship is threatened by true love, it leads to complications and potentially damaging revelations. Meanwhile, Ethan (John Krasinski), Rachel’s constant confidante, is evading the affection of Darcy’s hopelessly love-struck friend, Claire (Ashley Williams) while harboring a secret crush of his own; and Marcus (Steve Howey), an incorrigible womanizer, can’t keep his hands off any woman within reach.
