plaques honoring soldiers who were killed or died in the service during World War I. (Only one American veteran of World War I now remains alive.) Mayor Keith Killion, a Vietnam veteran, and Council Members Bernadette Walsh, Paul Aronsohn, and Thomas Riche strongly supported the plans to honor the departed World War I veterans with a plate installed on a boulder and the 14 individual markers. Aronsohn, supported by the other council members, suggested that since only a comparative minority of Ridgewood resi-
dents are members of Graydon Pool, the boulder might better be posted somewhere with more public access. Deputy Mayor Thomas Riche suggested the vicinity of the main flagpole, and Paoli agreed that this would be an ideal location. Mayor Killion and Deputy Mayor Riche formally folded the two flags in the proper manner, with the approval of the veterans, and the council accepted the World War I monument in concept but agreed to keep the location open for further negotiation with the veterans.

The standard American flag was one that had flown over a U.S. Army installation at Kandahar in Afghanistan, where Ridgewood’s First Lieutenant Ian Duke had soldiered for eight months as part of an outreach program to Afghan tribesmen. between American forces and Afghans who are opposed to extremists and terrorists. The second presentation was a banner designed in the shape of a standard American flag that lists the names of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 World Trade Center terror attack, which claimed the lives of 11 Ridgewood residents and residents from Glen Rock, Wyckoff, and Allendale. The special banner is designed to be flown on the 10th anniversary of the attack. Commander Paoli also told the council that the American Legion had funded and ordered replacement plaques for the 14
