The golf season will begin on April 14 at the Meadows Golf Club in Lincoln Park. Open House set The Academy of Our Lady will host an Open House on Wednesday, March 2 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Attendees will hear about the academic programs for pre-K (starting at age two) through eighth grade. Academy of Our Lady, which has earned Middle States Accreditation, offers a traditional core curriculum, Christian values, foreign language and computer classes, music, art, physical education, and many extracurricular activities. Landscape designers address Garden Club The Glen Rock Garden Club will host two speakers on March 15. Terry McMahon and Joseph Tuttle will present “Design Principles for a Backyard Retreat” at 7:45 p.m. at the Glen Rock Municipal Annex, 678 Maple Avenue. Both guest speakers are landscape designers with Borst Landscape & Design of Allendale. They have many years of experience in landscape design and construction. This meeting is open to all. Library offers book discussion groups The Glen Rock Public Library offers three books discussion groups for readers. On March 8 at 7:30 p.m., Glen Rock Reads: Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will discuss “Quantum: Einstein, Bohr, and the Great Debate about the Nature of Reality” by Manjit Kumar. Discover the complex nature of reality in this examination of some of the most powerful minds of the 20th century. Einstein and Bohr are presented as two powerful, opposing lightning rods of modern scientific thought. Tea and Talk at Two will discuss Jane Hamilton’s novel “When Madeline was Young” on Tuesday, March 15 at 2 p.m. This group meets the third Tuesday of month. The Neighbors Book Discussion Group is focusing on the immigrant experience in America. This group will meet on Monday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss Tim Gaynor’s “Midnight on the Line: The Secret Life of the U.S.-Mexico Border.” This nonfiction selection explores the complex, hotly debated issue of border control. Attempting to recreate a typical immigrant’s journey, Gaynor offers a fresh perspective on this highly politicized subject, interviewing individuals on both sides of the dispute. Seniors host Saint Patrick’s Day party The Saint Catharine Association of Mature Parishioners will host its Saint Patrick’s Day Party on Thursday, March 10 at the Royal Manor in Garfield. Good Shepherd services moved to school Due to the closure of the sanctuary from damage sustained to the roof supports, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church will hold worship service and Sunday school at Central Elementary School in Glen Rock. All schedules will remain the same: Sunday school will start at 9:30, followed by worship at 10:30. Communion and the coffee hour will follow immediately after service. Central School, located at 600 Maple Avenue, is barrierfree. A Good Shepherd sign will be on the entrance to the building. All other activities from Monday to Saturday will be at church. Parade committee seeks prizes, participation The Glen Rock Independence Day Parade Committee is seeking prizes for its fundraiser to help underwrite the cost of this year’s parade. Generous donations from local businesses, organizations, and residents have always helped fund the parade. This year, the there will be similar prizes with the possibility of an underwater digital camera and a painting donated by a Glen Rock artist. The committee encourages community members, organizations, neighborhood groups, and children’s organizations to consider entering a float in the parade. He came to Glen Rock a decade ago. The search for a new principal at Saint Peter Academy reportedly started in December. McCarthy was one of 34 applicants. Board members praised his work and said he would be hard to replace. Fire department (continued from page 7) due to layoffs, attrition without replacement, and negotiated retirements. Fire officers in particular questioned their ability to staff the firehouses for first responses with the remaining manpower. Ridgewood’s fire department has 36 paid firefighters and 14 volunteers on the roster, and while the volunteers are widely accepted – many hope to eventually become paid firefighters – the department’s philosophy has always been to have enough paid officers on hand to deal with first responses immediately.
