Ridgewood
Fire department approved for Homeland Security Grant
by John Koster The Department of Homeland Security has approved a $349,031 grant to help the Ridgewood Fire Department provide adequate staffing for fire and emergency response. “I think it’s great,” Ridgewood Fire Chief Jim Van Goor said of the news. “We can use the money to run the department because we lost four men last year due to retirement, and maybe we can replace them with three due to the grant.” The federal government will provide the entire $349,031. Ridgewood residents will not be required to pay anything through municipal property taxes. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said the purpose of the grants such as the one awarded to Ridgewood is to provide direct funding to fire departments and to volunteer firefighter organizations to help them increase the number of trained, front-line firefighters available
in their communities. The federal money cannot be used for lobbying and other political activities, but only for the hiring and training of firefighters. Ridgewood lost 34 employees last year (continued on page 8)
