March 2, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES I, II, III & IV • Page 17 Suspenseful five-day adventure comes to small screen by Dennis Seuling A re-creation of actual events, “127 Hours” (20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment) is director Danny Boyle’s first film since his Academy Award-winning “Slumdog Millionaire.” The story concerns Aron Ralston (James Franco), who sets out into the Utah desert to explore its caves and deep, narrow gorges one weekend. Adept at climbing and dealing with the harshness of the desert, Ralston makes the trip alone. In his knapsack, he has some snacks, bottled water, a knife, and assorted climbing gear. He has told no one where he is going. As he is climbing down into a crevice, a small boulder gives way, causing him to fall and pinning his right hand and lower arm against the crevice wall. Aron is trapped. He attempts to free himself, but nothing works. Despite the film’s claustrophobic location, Boyle manages to keep the audience riveted. Viewers experience the life-threatening situation through Aron’s eyes, seeing his thoughts and hallucinations as he imagines how friends and loved ones will react upon learning of his death in the wilderness. Aron is probably the most dramatic role of Franco’s career. Shouldering an entire feature-length picture is not light duty, and he turns in a solid performance. Franco shows a range of emotions as Aron reacts to the initial, excruciating pain of the accident, reasons out how to survive, makes a video record of what he assumes will be his last hours alive, and resorts to amazing courage in an attempt to escape. The subject matter of this true story frightens many people, who believe it will be too hard to take. Though Boyle does show a few graphic images, the movie is thankfully tasteful in recording this extraordinary tale. The Blu-ray edition includes feature commentary by director Boyle and the writers, deleted scenes, and a featurette about actual events that aided in the search and rescue of Aron Ralston. The film is also available on DVD. “Bambi” (Walt Disney Home Entertainment) is Walt Disney’s fifth full-length animated film, originally released in 1942. Based on the novel by Felix Slaten, it opens with the birth of a fawn named Bambi, hailed as the “Prince of the Forest.” Soon, Bambi emerges from the woods on shaky legs to the amusement of his new friends, Thumper the outgoing rabbit and Flower the bashful skunk. The carefree fun of chomping on blossoms and playing in the woods gives way to exploring his new world. Guided by the wisdom of Friend James Franco stars as the real-life Aron Ralston in ‘127 Hours.’ Owl, Bambi learns valuable life lessons with every adventure, experiencing the power of friendship, family, and love along the way.
