Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • March 2, 2011 Ridgewood Notes Super Science Saturday set The 23rd Annual Super Science Saturday, Ridgewood’s largest non-competitive academic event, will be held March 12 at Ridgewood High School, 627 East Ridgewood Avenue. This free event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Super Science Saturday offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to explore science experiments from many professional and amateur scientists, college and university presenters, and hundreds of students. This year’s event will feature a full morning of exhibits, shows, and demonstrations. There will be activities for everyone, including a show from Philadelphia’s famed Franklin Institute, the ever-popular model rocket launch and paper airplane contest on the football field, and plenty of hands-on learning activities. String Quartet to perform The Yaron Quartet will perform at the First Presbyterian Church of Ridgewood on Sunday March 13 at 2 p.m. Based at Bard College in Annandaleon-Hudson, New York, The Yaron String Quartet is comprised of Jiazhi Wang and Yuan Ma, violin; Wei Peng, viola; and Emma Schmiedecke, cello. All are outstanding double-major musicians studying in the Conservatory program at Bard. Wang is a native of Beijing, China, where she attended the Central Conserva- tory of Music. Ma hails from Shenzhen, China and attended the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied chamber and orchestral music in Germany. Peng was born in Jingzhou, Hubei in Central China and was a violin and viola student at the Central Conservatory in Beijing. Schmiedecke grew up in northern New Jersey and has performed in New York City’s Carnegie Hall. She also attended the Oxford Cello School in England. A freewill offering will be taken at intermission. Preschool ‘Sport Squirts’ offered The Ridgewood Recreation Division has invited U.S. Sports Institute to provide a spring session of “Sport Squirts.” Geared for children ages three through five, this program is designed to introduce children to a variety of sports in a safe, structured environment. All games and activities promote hand/eye coordination, balance, agility, and movement. In addition to learning basketball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, and soccer, participants develop social interaction and communication skills and have fun. One-hour sessions will be offered at Veteran’s Field North on Wednesdays beginning April 27. Choose one of the following sessions: 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., or 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. The seven-week session will run through June 8. Children invited to ‘Bubble Trouble’ “Bubble Trouble,” an interactive show that teaches children of all ages the science inside bubbles, will come to West Side Nursery School on Friday, March 11 at 3:30 p.m. Bubble Man Jeff Boyer will show children what holds bubbles together, why they are shaped the way they are, why bubbles are multi-colored, what each color says about the part of the bubble, and more. As a finale, Boyer will put a child inside a bubble! Tickets are $10 per child in advance; $12 at the door. Accompanying adults and children under the age of two will be admitted free of charge. Monster Golf Event slated The Youth Group of Christ Episcopal Church in Ridgewood has planned a Monster Golf Event for Sunday, March 6. Attendees will meet for pizza and beverages in the Great Hall at the church at 11:30 a.m., after which they will golf in Paramus. Evening of Celtic spirituality offered Our Lady of Mount Carmel Ridgewood and G.I.F.T. (Growing in Faith and Theology), a collaboration of Adult Faith Formation ministries from 10 area Catholic churches will sponsor “The Great Encircling: The Vision of Celtic Spirituality” March 3 at 7:30 p.m. Sister Kathleen Deignan, CND, PH.D will present the evening of word, music, and song in the parish center at Mount Carmel, 1 Passaic Street in Ridgewood. Sister Kathleen is professor of religious studies and founder and director of Iona Spirituality Institute at Iona College. Her CDs and books will be available for purchase. Yoga classes offered Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will offer yoga programs for youth. Yoga for middle school students will meet on Tuesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning March 8. High school students will have class on Wednesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning March 9. Middle school mixers offered Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will hold mixers at the Anne Zusy Youth Center for students from both district middle schools on the following dates: sixth grade, Friday, March 11; seventh grade, March 18; and eighth grade, March 25. Mixers are held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Each evening offers music and dancing with Sound Illusion DJ, refreshments, and games. Admission is $7 and is payable at the door.
