School board appoints new teachers, secretary
by John Koster The Ridgewood Board of Education appointed 10 new teachers and a new secretary at the June 13 meeting. Kacey Burde has been appointed a first grade teacher at the Hawes School effective Sept. 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012, at a salary of $50,890. Casey Cortopassi has been appointed a fourth grade teacher at the Ridge School at a salary of $55,210. Adam Scevola has been appointed a temporary leave of absence replacement mathematics teacher. He is in the process of obtaining a certificate of eligibility with advanced standing as a teacher of mathematic and will be registered in the New Jersey Department of Education Provisional Program at a salary of $50,890. Mariann Gelenius has been appointed a learning disabilities teacher at a salary of $94,248. Thomas Harney has been appointed as a second grade teacher at the Hawes School at a salary of $51,890. Erika Kulhanjian has been appointed a special education resource room teacher at a salary of $59,530. Daniel Thomas has been appointed a 0.6 mathematics teacher at Ridgewood High School at a pro-rated salary of $30,534. Kristen Turchioe has been appointed a temporary lease of absence first grade
The Village of Ridgewood has welcomed five new firefighters. Ridgewood Fire Chief Jim Van Goor explained that the new recruits have effectively replaced five people who recently retired. The department is back to its 2009 staff level, he chief added. Brian Van Hise has been hired as a mathematics teacher at Ridgewood High School at a salary of $59,530. Lisa Kontos has been hired as the head teacher of the three-year-old room at the Infant/Toddler Development Center at a salary of $27,000 plus $3,000 in lieu of benefits. Antonia Manahan has been hired as a secretary to the principal of the Travell School starting July 1, 2011, plus five days in June as needed. Her salary will be $37,405. Other teachers have been appointed to full-time jobs after serving in parttime positions. Rebecca Gattoni was increased from a 0.8 mathematics teacher at Ridgewood High School to a full-time teacher at step 16, brining her salary from $85,384 to $106,730. Lillian Labowsky was increased from a 0.5 science teacher to a full-time science teacher at Ridgewood High School at step 8 with an increase from $39,490 to $78,980. Nancy Merck was increased from a 0.8 speech language specialist at the Hawes School to a fulltime speech language specialist, with an increase from $84,184 to $105,230. Several other teachers have had jobs consolidated from two part-time jobs to one full-time job with no change in salary.
