Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • June 22, 2011 Glen Rock Girl Scouts receive Gold Award for community service by John Koster A number of Glen Rock Girl Scouts from Troop 250 and Troop 1068 have earned the Gold Award for service to the community. The girls received this honor – the top award available in Girl Scouting -- at a ceremony held at Saint Catharine Church. Stephanie Mallinas collected art supplies from her peers and donated the items to children in hospitals. Allison Neumann organized a week-long camp for girls at the Glen Rock Arboretum, where participants learned about the environment through expert speakers and various crafts. Sarah Beth Smick organized and hosted a municipal coffeehouse called Take Note for her peers. She used the proceeds from the event to purchase a drum set for Boys and Girls Club in Paterson. Danielle Basarico partnered with Sharing Arts, a nonprofit group, and founded a local chapter at Glen Rock High School. Basarico’s project also involved the production of a performance of “Alice in Wonderland” with special needs children. Marissa Clemente organized a workshop for girls 11 to 17 which focused on helping young girls to be safe in emergency situations, and demonstrated self-defense for girls. Adrian David held a camp for fourth grade and fifth grade girls to spread awareness of proper battery and medicine disposal. Kathereine Ilenko produced a show featuring Broadway music and performed for residents of a nursing home. Ilenko made use of the talents of Glen Rock High School students. Meaghan Lang coordinated teen events at the Glen Rock Public Library, including a midnight-release sleepover and Scary Movies Night. Catherine McClellan operated a week-long camp for young girls that focused on nutrition, fitness, and volleyball skills. Kimberly Schoenberg educated nursing home residents and homebound seniors about dental hygiene and coordinated free dental care for seniors. Cayla Vila ran a one-week camp for girls in the third and fifth grades. Her project focused on the environment and included women who are professionals in astronomy, chemistry, physics, zoology, and environmental science. The Tea and Book Talk will meet on June 21, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Glen Rock Public Library to discuss actor Gene Wilder’s novels “My French Whore” and “The Woman Who Wouldn’t.” Adults are invited to join the group for casual, informal Discussion of Gene Wilder novels set book discussions.
