Fourth of July celebration set This year’s Ridgewood Fourth of July celebration, “Celebrate the Constitution” will begin with a flag raising ceremony and speaker at 9 a.m. at Wilsey Square. American Legion Post 53 will be on hand, and Grace Prueninger will sing the national anthem. The parade will begin at 10 a.m., rain or shine, at North Monroe Street and Godwin Avenue. Handicapped parking for the parade will be available on Dayton Street behind Van Neste Park. While the parade is free, tickets are required for entrance to the fireworks display at Veterans Field. This year’s entertainment will include the Illumination Twirlers, and a performance by the students from Miss Patti’s School of Dance. Musical entertainment will be provided by “The Manhattan Dolls” and The Patriot Brass Ensemble. The skydiving team, The Fallin’ Angels, will provide an exhibition of skills at 8 p.m. The fireworks show will begin at dusk. Donations for fireworks tickets are one of the celebration’s largest sources of income. Ticket sales cover the evening’s entertainment, which will begin at 6 p.m. Ticket proceeds also cover the bands in the parade, and additional security and traffic control. Purchase tickets in advance for $8. The price at the gate will be $15. Children, ages five and under, will be admitted free of charge. Handicapped parking for the evening entertainment will be available at the parking lot to the east of Veterans Field. Approach Veterans Field on Linwood Avenue from the east, and turn left onto Northern Parkway. Turn right into the parking lot. There will be 20 spaces available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration began in 1910. Since that time, the celebration has grown into one of the largest in the New York City area and has been featured on CNN and “Good Morning America” as well as local New York stations. Services go live with videostreaming Live and on-demand streaming video of worship and other events is the newest service available at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. With the advent of a nine-camera videostreaming system, members of the congregation who cannot be present are able to watch live services or view them later on the church website. Congregational meetings, memorial services, and concerts have also been streamed live. All events are archived on the church website, www.westside.org. Victor Ladd, a Ridgewood resident, was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Victor was nominated by U.S. Senator Robert Menendez. Victor and his parents visited Menendez in his Newark Senate office on June 3. United States Senators are able to recommend students to the West Point Academy, the Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy and the United States Coast Guard.
College Workshop from June 27 through Aug. 8. The fiveweek program will meet on Mondays from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at 120 Chestnut Street in Ridgewood. Topics to be addressed include dorm life, commuting, campus resources, roommate issues, organization, time management, homesickness, daily living, money management, drugs and alcohol, the unexpected, the question of disclosure, and advocacy. The Mega Sports Camp, the children’s summer program at Grace Church in Ridgewood, will be held this year from July 11 through 15. This year’s theme, “The Great Comeback,” will help children develop strength, speed, and stamina through sports training, discover character-building concepts, and learn to rely on God to help them live an overcoming life so they can be the Great Comeback in sports and in life, while having fun. Kasschau Shell performances announced Summer entertainment at the Kasschau Shell will continue June 21 with an 8:30 p.m. concert featuring Greg Caldarone performing popular and Italian standards. Boiling Springs Savings Bank will sponsor this concert. On June 23, The Bobby Byrne Show will present Broadway Show Tunes. This concert is sponsored by TD Bank. The June 28 concert will feature Lou Gallo and Friends, who will offer a “Children’s Evening.” This concert is sponsored by Ridgewood Dentistry - Warren Boardman D.M.D and Clemente Orthodontics. Thunderhill Band will entertain with country and western music on June 30. This program is sponsored by Care One at the Cupola and Care One at Pine Rest. Now in its 53nd year of free summer entertainment, Under the Stars at the Kasschau Shell will offer concerts on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Veterans Field band shell. Each week, a variety of family entertainment will be offered. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket. Restrooms are wheelchair accessible. In addition, many local organizations and businesses provide the funds to support these programs. Minetto offers art workshop Award-winning artist and instructor Lorraine Minetto will offer an oil painting workshop, Mixing Color and Values in Oils, at The Ridgewood Art Institute on Sunday, June 26 from 9 a.m. to noon. Students will learn how to mix color and values and where to place these values to accurately depict a three dimensional object on a canvas. The cost of the workshop is $100.
