Emmanuel asks...
Can You Help?
Our hat’s off to: The members of Ramsey Girl Scout Troop 709, who did an awesome Food Drive for us at the A&P in Mahwah; Abundant Life Reformed Church in Wyckoff and Nativity Church in Midland Park for their wonderful Food Drive; and Alex Casapulla and Kereona Gallagher, eighth graders at Pequannock Valley Middle School, who collected supplies for us to make almost 90 birthday bags. Thank you all! Riley is a six-year-old who was diagnosed with leukemia. Her parents both work full time. Like so many of the families we see, Riley’s mom had to stop working to help support the family. Riley has two sisters: Annabelle, who is four; and Gracie, who is nine. This has been very hard on their family, emotionally and financially. Summer is coming up and they are struggling to pay for activities 4-29-09 karen/janine and babysitting for the girls, while Riley is in treatment. EmmanuelHelp2x.75(4-29-09) Riley enjoys playing games and is just starting to read. Her treatment is just about to begin and her family is very 3 x .75 overwhelmed. Please consider making a donation to help her family. They are new to the area and do not have a large support system from their community yet. Her father was transferred to the area only a few months ago. We currently distribute about 140 bags of food to our families each month. Please help us fill our pantry. When you go grocery shopping and something non-perishable
is on sale, grab some extra items and drop them off. Our families appreciate it. ECF uses contributions to support the cost associated with providing free services to any child in New Jersey who has cancer. Approximately 70 cents from every dollar goes toward direct care for our families. We are now planning a Wine & Cheese fundraiser for September and our Second Annual Bash, which will be held in early February 2012. We are looking for volunteers to help with these events. Please call us if you would like to get involved. We just need a few hours of your time. Do you like to plan parties? Do you have experience in marketing or event planning? Please call us!
ECF is seeking bilingual caseworkers all over the state. These are paid contractual positions. You can help in a variety of other ways. Consider turning your next event into a fundraiser, and collect checks or gift cards to help ECF’s families. Your efforts help us to help families like Riley’s in many ways. Kids can get involved, by holding a sale or a lemonade stand to raise funds for our families. If your Cub Scout or Girl Scout Troop needs to earn badges, give us a call. We rely on you to help support our families. Many of them do not have the financial or emotional support to help them get through a major illness like cancer. Please (continued on page 20)

Eighteen students have been awarded scholarships for 2011-12 from the Valley Health System Stringer/Featherstone Nursing Scholarship Award Program. Kay Yeomans is chair of the Scholarship Award Committee. The Valley Health System Stringer/Featherstone Nursing Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to qualified applicants. Specifically, the program is for students who intend to pursue a nursing program in an educational institution accredited by the National League for Nursing or other qualified accrediting agencies leading to licensure or a degree in nursing.
Valley Health System awards scholarships
To be eligible for a Stringer/Featherstone Nursing Scholarship, the applicants had to meet certain qualifications, including enrollment in an accredited nursing program, recommendation by the guidance counselor or dean/chairman of a college nursing program, indications of self-help on the part of the applicant, financial need, and residency within in the geographical area serviced by Valley Health System and its affiliates. This year’s four new recipients are listed here with their hometowns and academic institutions they plan to attend. (continued on page 20)
