June 15, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 27 Ridgewood Water closes well; investigates arsenic issue by John Koster Late last week, the Ridgewood Water Company notified local customers that it had shut down one of its 51 wells, reportedly the Lee Well in Glen Rock, due to “a drinking water standard violation for arsenic.” Ridgewood Water expects to rectify the situation within two months. On May 9, Ridgewood Water Company management received word that a water sample collected on March 8 at one well had an arsenic concentration that exceeded New Jersey state standards. The New Jersey standard for arsenic is five parts per billion. However, the company reported that the “average level of arsenic in this single well over the last year of sampling was 5.75 ppb.” The company said none of the samples collected from the well in question exceeded the federal MCL (maximum contaminant level) of 10 ppb. “Note that the elevated result was obtained from only one of the 51 active supply wells,” the letter to water company customers states. “The remaining wells, plus water purchased from United Water, exhibited arsenic levels below the New Jersey MCL. Arsenic is a naturally-occurring substance in groundwater in the Ridgewood area. Samples collected in May 2011 show that the reported laboratory results may have overstated the actual concentration.” According to Ridgewood Water’s letter, “This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified within 24 hours. However, some people who drink water in excess of the MCL over many years could experience skin damage or problems with their circulatory system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.” The Ridgewood Water Company provides water for Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Midland Park and Wyckoff. Ridgewood also purchases water from United Water, which reported no problems with arsenic. The Ridgewood Water Company says that there is no need for residents to boil water or exercise other precautions.
