Community invited to Bake-Off Contest Members of the Fire Department Auxiliaries of Ho-HoKus, Wyckoff, Waldwick, and Mahwah will participate in the first Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary Bake-Off Contest. Participants will whip up pies, cakes, and other treats for a panel of judges, including professional chefs and mayors from the participating towns. The event will begin at noon on Saturday, June 11 at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern at 1 East Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus. All are invited to enjoy lunch on their own, and then stay for the judging on categories including taste, appearance, and difficulty. Proceeds from the bake-off, including the pre-sale of a commemorative cookbook, will benefit a fire relief charity. For additional information, call (201) 445-4115. Butterfly release set Hearts & Crafts Grief Counseling of Ramsey invites the community to a Butterfly Release on Thursday, June 23 from 5 to 8 p.m. to honor the memory of a loved one who has died. The names of those being honored will be read as live butterflies are released throughout Barnstable Court in Saddle River. Light refreshments will be served. Butterflies may be purchased for $10 at www.heartsandcraftscounseling.org
or by mailing a check to 60 East Main Street, Ramsey, NJ 07446 along with the name of the loved one being honored. All proceeds go towards local bereaved children and their families. Hearts & Crafts Grief Counseling was founded in 1994 to serve families living with serious illness and loss and is dedicated to providing a safe, caring environment as families work through their healing process. Exhibit entries sought for summer show The Ridgewood Art Institute is seeking entries for its Members’ Summer Show, scheduled to run July 5 through Aug. 28. Members are invited to submit one or two entries. The paintings must be priced for sale. The institute will receive items for the exhibit June 20 through 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or during class meetings. Auxiliary luncheon features nutrition expert Nutrition expert Joy Bauer, MS, RD, CDN, will be the guest speaker at The Valley Hospital Auxiliary’s Annual
Meeting and Luncheon on Wednesday, June 15 at 11:30 a.m. at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus. The new executive board will be sworn in at this event. Bauer hosts a bi-weekly series, “Joy Fit Club” for the TODAY Show which celebrates determined people who have lost and kept off 100 pounds or more through diet and exercise alone. She also hosts the series Joy’s Diet S.O.S., Joy’s Kitchen Rescue, and Joy’s Healthy Food Finds. The author of many New York Times best-sellers, her “Slim and Scrumptious” offers more than 75 easy-to-make, familyfriendly recipes that help adults and children eat healthier. The cost for the luncheon is $30 for auxiliary members and $40 for non-members, which includes the $10 membership fee. Household hazardous waste collection offered The Bergen County Utilities Authority will sponsor a free household hazardous waste collection on June 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine, at Bergen County College, 400 Paramus Road in Paramus. Materials that will be accepted include aerosol cans, batteries of all types, bug sprays, drain cleaners, and paints of all types. Opera Company holds auditions Opera 691, the Wyckoff Y’s Opera Company, will hold auditions for “The Barber of Seville,” on Monday, June 20 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Y, 691 Wyckoff Avenue in Wyckoff.
