June 1, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Master Gary Stevens has been teaching martial arts in New Jersey for 35 years. First in Tenafly, Englewood, and Leonia, Stevens settled in Glen Rock in 1984 and has been teaching TaeKwonDo in the borough since that time. While he has seen northern New Jersey change over the years, he still has complete commitment to the community and continues to teach, now in a new larger location located at 175 Rock Road. In celebration of his 35 years of service to the communities in northern New Jersey, Master Stevens is offering anyone who has not studied with him a free introductory lesson and a free month of classes in the new school. This offer is open to new students only. He is also planning a series of lectures on health, nutrition, self-defense, and exercise in the coming months that will be free to the public with invited guest professionals from various fields. Master Stevens began his training in TaeKwonDo in 1973 under legendary Grandmaster Richard Chun, 9th Dan by Kukkiwon (World Tae Kwon Do Federation) and Moo Duk Kwan, one of the highest-ranking master instructors in the United States. Through hard work and natural talent, Stevens was awarded his “first degree” black belt in 1975, after only two years of training. He continued to train with the grandmaster and was one of his most diligent students and became a popular instructor in the grandmaster’s school. As one of Chun’s most gifted students, Master Stevens holds a 6th Dan (sixth degree black belt). Blending Grandmaster Chun’s training with his own unique philosophy, he has instructed many talented martial artists throughout his 35+ years as an instructor. Stevens marks 35th anniversary A thing of beauty Glen Rock Girl Scout troops recently participated in the annual Rock Road Planting. The weather cooperated and almost 70 tree wells and planters were filled with beautiful flowers. All age groups helped in this endeavor, from kindergarten Daisies to eighth grade Cadettes, which is coordinated every year by Pam Wolak.
