Primary candidates run unchallenged; contest to come
by John Koster
On June 7, Glen Rock’s registered voters will have the opportunity to endorse the Democratic and Republican candidates for the borough’s mayor and council seats. The candidates will be unopposed in their respective parties’ primaries, but will face off in the general election in November, when the mayor’s seat and two council seats will be available. Glen Rock Mayor John van Keuren and former Democratic council member Mark McCullough will square off for the mayoral race in November, and Democratic challenger Howard Fox will vie with Republican incumbents Art Pazan and Pam Biggs for one of
the two borough council seats. Mayor van Keuren, a retired actuary with a degree from Hamilton College, will be seeking his third term as mayor. McCullough, a graduate of Hope College, served one term on the council as a Democrat at the time the council was evenly balanced between Democrats and Republicans. He is a member of the Glen Rock Planning Board and active in a number of groups. Biggs is a graduate of Georgetown and a full-time homemaker. She will be seeking her second term in November. Pazan, an executive in the food industry, is a twoterm incumbent and an advocate of responsible spend-
ing. Fox holds an MBA in finance and investment from Baruch College and is a member of the Glen Rock Technology committee, a volunteer group which works in electronic communications within borough government. He runs several online businesses. Glen Rock, which is generally solidly Republican, had one Democratic council member, Howard Bookbinder, in the 1980s. After the controversial 1995 revaluation prompted 800 tax appeals, voters elected an Independent, Richard Hahn, as mayor, and several Democrats, including Tom Ludlum and McCullough, to the council. Joan Orseck is now the only Democrat on the council.
