Japanese students and chaperones from Onomachi, Japan will arrive at the Glen Rock Annex on the evening of July 27 for the beginning of their week-long stay in Glen Rock. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the program

in which borough residents host Japanese middle school students in their homes and show the visitors around the area. Onomachi, located in northern Honshu, the largest
island of Japan, was outside the area of nuclear contamination during the Fukushima meltdown following this spring’s earthquake and tsunami. Glen Rock residents conducted a special video-taped rally to show their support for Japan, and offered to send “care packages,” but the Onomachi residents told them to send the packages to the people who live closer to Fukushima. Onomachi residents also sheltered a number of tsunami and meltdown victims in their own homes in the aftermath of the catastrophe. The Japanese middle school students who will arrive in the borough this week will tour the Glen Rock Library, the ambulance corps building, and the police station before lunch with Mayor John van Keuren. The group will also tour Glen Rock High School in the early afternoon, followed by a late afternoon visit to the Glen Rock pool, which is already famous in Japan. On Friday, the students will take a bus to New York City to visit the Statue of Liberty and the United Nations, and on Saturday they will spend a day with their Glen Rock host families. A farewell party and cookout at the Glen Rock Pool will mark the end of the visit to Glen Rock. The students will also spend several days at Camp Hilltop in Hamilton, New York before their return to Japan. J. KOSTER
