HILT plans events Domenick Panfile of Dumont will entertain the members of Highlights in Leisure Time on Aug. 11 at 10 a.m. Panfile, who is pursuing a musical career at Montclair University, will perform Broadway show tunes and arias from various operas. He was the recipient of The National Association of Teachers’ first prize for singing during his freshman year at Montclair. Panfile has been performing since he was in the fifth grade. On Aug. 18, HILT will offer a sight-seeing and dining cruise at the Jersey Shore. Attendees will enjoy waterfront dining at the Shrimp Box Restaurant in Point Pleasant Beach. After lunch, participants will board the River Belle for a 90-minute narrated cruise along the inland waters of the Manasquan River, Point Pleasant Canal, and Barnegat Bay. Participants may board the bus at the Graydon Pool lot beginning at 10:15 a.m. The bus will depart at 10:30 a.m. and will return at 5 p.m. The cost is $40 for HILT members and $45 for non-members. Ridgewood residents 55 and older are invited to join Highlights in Leisure Time, a senior organization under the auspices of the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation. Monthly meetings are held at 10 a.m. at The Community Center at Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood, and include entertainment and refreshments. Annual membership dues are $15. Registration begins for new fall classes The Ridgewood YMCA will offer a host of new classes this fall. Registration for the fall session will open Monday, Aug. 8 at 8:30 a.m., and classes will run Sept. 12 through Nov. 6. New classes for adults include: A Healthier You, an innovative eight-week lifestyle and fitness program led by an experienced coach. Each week, participants meet with their coach in small groups to learn about nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyles. These discussions are complemented by weekly workout sessions, including cardio, wellness, and strength and conditioning. Cardio, Core+ More offers a high-energy cardio workout using basic aerobic steps followed by toning exercises with a focus on the body’s core. New offerings for children are: Sportacular, a sports sampler class for children ages three through five. Each week, the program will feature a new sport. Offerings include soccer, T-ball, basketball, and more. The program is designed to offer kids a great introduction to youth sports. Kidz Kuisine will give budding chefs in the family a chance to have fun in the kitchen as they create healthy snacks and appetizers. tinue July 26 with a concert featuring Rio Clemente and Friends, Bishop of Jazz. This concert is sponsored by Feeney Funeral Home and the A.M. Rotary Club. On July 28, Andy Cooney and his band “Irish Music” will entertain. This concert is sponsored by Boiling Springs Savings Bank. The Aug. 2 concert will feature YesterDaze “Doo Wop” This concert is sponsored by Ulrich, Inc. and Van Dyk Health Care, Inc. Now in its 53nd year of free summer entertainment, Under the Stars at the Kasschau Shell will offer concerts on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. at the Veterans Field band shell. Each week, a variety of family entertainment will be offered. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket. Restrooms are wheelchair accessible. For taped rain site information (June through August only), call (201) 444-1776 after 7 p.m. The Kasschau Memorial Shell operates under the auspices of the Village of Ridgewood in cooperation with the Department of Parks and Recreation. In addition, many local organizations and businesses provide the funds to support these programs. Swim team tryouts set The Ridgewood YMCA Breakers competitive swim team will hold tryouts on Aug. 1, 3, and 5, and Sept. 6, 8, and 9 at the Ridgewood YMCA on Oak Street in Ridgewood. Tryouts will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Pre-registration is not required. The fee to participate in the tryout is $10. YMCA membership is not required to try out; however, swimmers who are invited to join the Breakers swim team must become Ridgewood YMCA members. Registration will open at 4 p.m. on tryout days. The August tryout dates are open to all swimmers ages six and up. Swimmers age nine through 12 will try out on Sept. 6. Swimmers who are age eight and under will try out on Sept. 8. Sept. 9 will be for swimmers ages 13 and over and make ups. Each swimmer should participate in tryouts based on his or her age as of Dec. 1, 2011. Youth chess club forming The Bergen Chessmates Chess Club, based in the United Methodist Church of Ridgewood at 100 Dayton Street, is now accepting new members for its chess club for scholastic players of all levels (ages six through high school). Sessions will be held on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the
church. Members from beginners to advanced students will learn the fundamentals of the game, and have an opportunity to participate tournaments. Members will receive one-on-one and group instruction and play weekly games. There is no cost for membership, and all training materials are provided free of charge. Cameron Blair of Ridgewood built his own lost city for his ‘Lost and Found: Atlantis?’ class at the Gifted Child Society’s Summer Super Stars six-week day camp at Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale. During the class, students investigate the civilization and culture of Atlantis as it may have existed thousands of years ago.
Photography club mounts exhibit The Hobbyists will present a Photo Show at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood during the month of July. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exhibit features the work of the Camera Club, which meets twice a month. Meetings cover subjects that include photo management and editing. Members work on special assignments and submissions are presented and analyzed at the meetings. No prior experience is required to become a member.
