Kayaking instruction offered The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department is offering kayaking instruction to village residents at the Graydon Pool. Instruction will be provided by Betty Wiest, a member of the Hackensack River Canoe and Kayak Club. The course will include the basics of kayaking, various types of boats, proper use of equipment, technique of entry, paddle strokes, and safety. All equipment, including kayaks, paddles, and floatation devices, will be provided by Eastern Mountain Sports. The following sessions will be offered rain or shine: Saturday, July 9 or Saturday, Aug. 13 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Saturday, Sept. 10, at Monksville Reservoir. Details will follow. HILT offers activities Jack Sherry will offer a program on the accomplishments of Benjamin Franklin at the July 14 Highlights in Leisure Time meeting. Sherry will be dressed in period clothing and will include a portrayal of 18th century life. This history teacher at Paramus Catholic High School has appeared on national TV in this role. Ridgewood residents 55 and older are invited to join Highlights in Leisure Time, a senior organization under the auspices of the Ridgewood Department of Parks and Recreation. Monthly meetings are held at 10 a.m. at The Community Center at Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood, and include entertainment and refreshments. Annual membership dues are $15. On July 21, HILT will travel to Li Greci’s Staaten Restaurant on Staten Island for lunch. All Star Productions will present “Nashville in New York,” a program of country and blue grass entertainment. Author to discuss creative process Children’s author/illustrator and Allendale resident Jennifer Merz will demonstrate how she creates her picture books on July 14 at the Ridgewood Public Library. Merz will discuss the inspiration behind her stories in an interactive program entitled “From Brown Bag to Picture Book” at this 2 p.m. program. Children will have the opportunity to create their own collage based upon Merz’s new story of global travel and worldwide cultures. A book sale and signing will follow the program, and each child will receive a picture to take home and color. “From Brown Bag to Picturebook” is offered as part of the Library’s Summer Reading Club and is open to Ridgewood cardholders and KidsCardholders, ages five through eight. Emmanuel hosts VBS Emmanuel Baptist Church welcomes children from age three through those who have just completed fifth grade to the “Shake it up Café” Vacation Bible School July 18 through 21 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The program invites chefsin-training to learn about God’s recipe for living. The evening will begin with a light supper, and will include music, Bible lessons, crafts, and science exploration. The suggested donation is $10 per child. Kasschau Shell performances announced Summer entertainment at the Kasschau Shell will continue July12 with a concert featuring Island Breeze performing reggae and Latin music. Now in its 53nd year of free summer entertainment, Under the Stars at the Kasschau Shell will offer concerts on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. at the Veterans Field band shell. Services go live with video streaming Live and on-demand streaming video of worship and other events is the newest service available at West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood. With the advent of a nine-camera video streaming system, members of the congregation who cannot be present are able to watch live services or view them later on the church website. Support group for female veterans forming The YWCA Bergen County Rape Crisis Center is offering a free and confidential Military Sexual Trauma Support Group for female veterans or active duty military survivors.
