Registration is underway and classes will begin the week of Jan. 31. Mom & Tot classes for toddlers 18 to 30 months old are designed to encourage speech, motor, social, and emotional skills through play and group interaction. A winter Terrific for Tots class for twoand-a-half-year-olds will begin this week. This preschool class offers a nurturing environment designed for the child’s first school experience without a parent. Age requirement for all classes is as of April 1, 2011. Registration is ongoing at the Glen Rock Community School office, 600 Harristown Road, in the lobby of Glen Rock High School. Library hosts teen book discussions Teens are invited to the informal book discussions at the Glen Rock Public Library. Sessions meet every other Monday at 7:30 p.m. and are designed for teens to express their reactions to an eclectic selection of works. Each month will feature one graphic novel and one text novel. The Feb. 7 selection will be “Smile,” a hilarious graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier. This opportunity to explore some of the most revered teen titles is supported by the Friends of the Glen Rock Public Library. Sign-up sheets and copies of the books are located at the reference desk. Computer classes offered The Glen Rock Public Library will offer three different computer skills classes, with two time slots available for each. A basics course will meet on Thursdays at 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 27, or Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 29. A Microsoft Word 2007 course will meet on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 26, or Saturdays at 10 a.m. beginning Jan. 29. An Internet course will be held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. beginning Jan. 25, or Thursdays at 10 a.m. beginning Jan. 27. Participants will master the mouse, learn the lingo, and comprehend the computer. Beginners are encouraged to start with the nine-week basics course. The Microsoft Word 2007 and Internet courses each run for 12 weeks. Registration is required, and space is limited. Learn about lilacs Master Gardener Dr. Edith Wallace will present an illustrated program, “Lovely Lilacs: From Skylands to Your Garden,” to the Glen Rock Garden Club on Tuesday, Feb 15 at 7:45 p.m. Dr. Wallace will discuss selecting, planting, and caring for lilacs. She is a biology professor emeritus at William Paterson University, and has been co-coordinator of the Lilac Garden Restoration Project at the New Jersey Botanical Gardens/Skylands for 13 years. She is certified in three different aspects of plant science by the New York Botanical Garden Department of Continuing Education. The program, which is open to the public, will be held in the Glen Rock Municipal Annex at 678 Maple Avenue. Refreshments will be served. Catholic Schools Week celebrated The Academy of Our Lady will host an Open House on Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and on Feb. 1 and 2 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Learn about the academic programs offered for students beginning in pre-K through eighth grade. Pre-K programs are available for children at age two. The school offers a traditional core curriculum subjects with Christian values emphasized through community service. The school has a fully-equipped science lab, advanced multimedia and learning technologies; and classes in foreign language, computers, music, art, and physical. Citizens asked to help with historical program Glen Rock Television is seeking participants in producing a multi-part series that will chronicle the history of Glen Rock. The station is looking for historical documents, photographs, or other materials that citizens may be willing to share. Also being sought are citizens with a historical perspective who would be willing to sit for a television interview to share on-camera their knowledge and interesting anecdotes about the history of Glen Rock. Glen Rock Television is a 24-hour independent public access not-for-profit channel dedicated to serving Glen Rock. GRTV is available currently on Cablevision Channel 77 and Verizon FiOS Channel 32. Temple to host ‘Concert for Darfur’ Peace through Music: A Concert for Darfur, will take place Jan. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Barnert Temple, 747 Route 208 South in Franklin Lakes. The coffee-house style acoustic concert will feature amateurs and professionals of all ages. The event will include prize baskets and contests. Food and beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under age 13, and may be purchased at the door or in advance.
