Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • January 26, 2011 Ridgewood West Point Band performs Mozart in village by John Koster The West Point Band recently offered a one-piece concert at West Side Presbyterian Church. Senior sergeants of the Regular Army led by Captain Dae Kim offered a professional-quality performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Serenade No. 10, K361: The Gran Partita” played with such warmth and proficiency that the audience applauded through three bows and gave the musicians a standing ovation. The “Gran Partita” is something of an anomaly. Mozart was a child prodigy on the piano and the violin, and most of his orchestral works reflect this, but the “Gran Partita” was written for woodwind instruments and a double bass viol. Mozart’s innovation was to write a substantial musical piece for concerts rather than as background music for parties or dinners. Performances of the “Gran Partita” in its entirely are infrequent. Some of the music turned up in the film “Amadeus,” a highly imaginative biography of Mozart, but other Left: Members of the West Point Concert Band. The West Point Band played two oboes, two clarinets, two basset horns, two bassoons, and four french horns. Captain Kim explained that the musicians were selected after auditions from most of the nation’s top musical educa- tion programs, and the performance proved it. The performance was technically flawless and played with sprightly enthusiasm. Applause was warm and sustained. While the performance was free, two baskets full of cash and checks from satisfied concert-goers suggested that the music and the performers were greatly appreciated.
