Glen Rock January 19, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Citizens, officials to discuss recycling center plans by John Koster Next week, the Glen Rock Council and other municipal officials will meet with neighbors of Doremus Avenue and other interested citizens to discuss the updated plans for the reconfiguration of the borough’s recycling area. Glen Rock Borough Engineer Mike DeSena and Director of Public Works Bob Tiserio will be present, along with Mayor John van Keuren, Glen Rock Borough Administrator Lenora Benjamin, and members of the governing body. “We’ve responded to the recommendations we’ve received so far and we’re offering residents of Doremus Avenue a chance to look at the plans,” Benjamin said. “We will be listening to the residents who attend the meeting on Jan. 24 as well and may make additional changes based on their advice.” The Jan. 24 meeting will take place at the council chambers in Glen Rock Borough Hall at 7:30 p.m. The reconfiguration plans, to be carried out with $400,000 from the borough’s capital budget, will add 120 parking spaces for sports events. The borough will also construct a proper office for the recycling area, replacing the drafty shack that now shelters recycling workers in inclement weather. The new building will contain barrier-free restrooms for the nearby sports fields. Doremus Avenue residents had suggested that the metal recycling bins either be left where they are or moved farther from Doremus Avenue to prevent the mice and yellow jackets wasps that feed at the bins from pestering neighbors. They also urged visual screening in the form of berms and bushes or trees to protect neighborhood aesthetics and property values. Benjamin noted that while the Doremus Avenue residents had been personally invited to the final planning session on Jan. 24, residents from any part of Glen Rock are welcome to attend if they so desire. The recycling area and the adjacent landfill are located near the sports fields, the municipal pool complex, and the Glen Rock Arboretum, a museum of living trees and shrubs from all over the temperate zones of North America, Europe, and Asia. Glen Rock was one of the first communities to dedicate a recycling area and coordinate a recycling program in the early 1970s, when ecology first became a widespread public concern. The recycling center accepts three colors of glass, most forms of plastic, newsprint, cardboard, and electronics. The facility also recycles tree branches into mulch with the use of a tub grinder jointly owned with Ridgewood and turns grass clippings and leaves into topsoil available free to Glen Rock residents.
