Fire departments seek aid after snowstorms Area fire departments ask that residents who live near fire hydrants help keep those hydrants free of snow and ice during the winter. Since the local fire departments are volunteer organizations, mandatory training and drills make it impossible for the members to devote time to clear snow from fire hydrants after a storm. Most fire hydrants are marked with a stake, but they may still be difficult for first responders to locate in the event of a fire. Residents who have hydrants on their properties and hire a private contractor plow their driveways and sidewalks are asked to instruct the contractor to keep the hydrants clear of snow and ice. Genealogy expert to speak The Genealogical Society of Bergen County will host Sachiko Clayton on Monday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood. Armenia, Georgia to be discussed Travel photographer Lorraine Matys will present “Ancient Lands: Georgia and Armenia,” on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the Waldwick Public Library. For thousands of years, the small republics of Georgia and Armenia, in the heart of the Caucasus, have been a crossroads of cultures. Archaeological evidence suggests they are the sites of the oldest presence of human ancestors out of Africa and the origin of wine making. Central Asian nomads and Near Eastern traders all left their mark in the area. There are also influences from the ancient Roman Empire and early Christians. Highlights of the presentation will include centuries-old churches with richly decorated wall paintings and icons, mountain landscapes with picturesque villages, age-old fortresses, and caravansaries that once accommodated merchants traveling along the Silk Road from Europe to the East.
