New Jersey Public Defender Yvonne Smith Segars will be the keynote speaker at this year’s celebra- Glen Rock, Ridgewood set King Day observance tion, which focuses on the theme, “Working for the Common Good.” Sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Ridgewood/Glen Rock Communities, the celebration will begin at 10 a.m. with an interfaith service presided over by Reverend Dr. George W. Maize, III, pastor of the Metropolitan AME Zion Church. The service will be followed by a rally in Van Neste Square at 11 a.m. and a community luncheon. The afternoon fellowship program, featuring Public Defender Segars, will begin at 1 p.m. and will include readings by Ridgewood and Glen Rock high school students. Segars, who resides in Ridgewood, has been serving as New Jersey’s Public Defender since 2002. She is a veteran public defender who has been a leading force in the creation of special drug courts throughout the state. Those courts provide non-violent drug offenders the opportunity to serve an intensively supervised probation period instead of a prison sentence, during which they are given help to kick their drug habits.
