A Ridgewood woman was the victim of a transatlantic identity theft as her bank account was accessed to make $1,600 in unauthorized and illegal purchases in the United Kingdom. The woman recently contacted the Ridgewood Police Department, which is currently investigating, and explained that she had received an e-mail from her bank stating that her account had been locked due to multiple failed attempts to log in. The bank then told her the lock-in had been caused by someone with a similar account number. The Ridgewood victim shortly received an e-mail from a person who asked for help to unlock her own account. The Ridgewood woman supplied information to unlock the compromised account. The Ridgewood woman shortly found that $1,600 had been withdrawn from her own account to make purchases in the UK. On Dec. 15, two employees of a Ridgewood physician’s office reported that their cell phones had been stolen from their purses. A pair of man’s gloves was also stolen. On Dec. 16, 14 blouses were stolen from a local clothing store. The employees did not name any suspects in the theft. On Dec. 20, a home on Albin Court was burglarized by

forcing open a rear door. The victim did not report anything missing, but the Ridgewood Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department are investigating. On Dec. 30, a Glenwood Road resident reported that a screen had been removed from a window while he was away for the holidays. A check of the residence disclosed that the home had not been entered. On the same day, an Oak Street resident reported that a screen had been cut and a basement window broken while he was away for the holidays. This home was not entered either. An Elmsley Court resident reported that he had noticed pieces of jewelry missing from his residence after a number of contractors had been employed working on the house. The Ridgewood Police Detective Department is investigating. Two burglaries were attempted against offices at 400 Route 17 on Dec. 30. One office was entered through a window, but nothing appeared to be missing. A second office was found with pry marks on the door, but the attempted entry was unsuccessful. On Jan. 1, a driver from Citywide Towing reported that he saw someone rip two flashing lights off his truck while
he was parked on North Broad Street. The matter is under investigation by the Ridgewood Detective Bureau. J. KOSTER
