January 12, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Glen Rock Reorganization session held in new council chambers by John Koster The Glen Rock Council began the New Year with a reorganization meeting that was the first public gathering held in the new council chambers at borough hall. “This is our first meeting in our restored quarters,” said Mayor John van Keuren. “I can’t believe there’s anybody who doesn’t know the trials and tribulations that went into this.” The Reverend Tim Burger of All Saints Episcopal Church offered an invocation at the meeting, which also saw the appointment of Councilwoman Pamela Biggs as council president and the swearing-in of several new municipal board members and reelected Council Members Mike O’Hagan and Mary Jane Surrago. Mayor van Keuren held up a portrait for former Mayor Fred Demarest, preserved from the original borough hall but not yet hung, in the newly opened chambers. The portrait is symbolic of the continuity between the 1920s borough hall and the $5.4 million expanded and renovated structure. Construction delays and extremely high rainfall two years ago had led the council to announce the reopening of the new building several times -and postpone the opening of the building several times. The council had previously held its public meetings in the conference room, which had about 20 chairs available to the public. “I think that most people know that the essential completion of this building has taken place and that it wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of a lot of people,” Mayor van Keuren said. He mentioned Clerk of the Works Jeannine MacDonald, Borough Attorney Robert Garibaldi, and Borough Administrator Lenora Benjamin, and the entire council and staff for their steady performances during the long-delayed opening, first of the building, and more recently of the council chambers. During the reorganization, William Mitchell was appointed as a new member of the Glen Rock Board of Adjustment through 2014, and Katharine Tuite was appointed to the Glen Rock Planning Board for the same amount of time, with Robert Van Langen appointed as a one-year planning board alternate. Sandy Chapman and Paul Sharur were both sworn to terms on the Glen Rock Environmental Commission, Neil Foster was appointed to the Ethical Standards Board, Dr. Carl Renner and Theresa Andretta were appointed to three years terms on the board of health, and Mark Sapienza was appointed to fill a one-year unexpired term. Mayor van Keuren said that working with the same council he worked with last year would enable the five Republicans and Democrat Joan Orseck to continue to confront the economic challenges of the borough. “This group really knows how to work as a group and get things done, and it’s made by job a lot more enjoyable,” van Keuren said. He pledged to foster even better communication between the council and the residents. “At the end of the day, we all respect one another, we all listen to one another, and we all listen to the residents,” said Council President Biggs, who will fill in as mayor in case of Mayor van Keuren’s absence from meetings.
