Ridgewood Notes
Film/discussion to feature ‘Blazing Saddles’ Temple Israel and JCC of Ridgewood will present the comedy film “Blazing Saddles” on Sunday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. Temple Israel’s spiritual leader, Rabbi David J. Fine, Ph.D., will lead a discussion following the film. The film and discussion are open to the public, and there is a $5 suggested donation to cover costs and refreshments. “Blazing Saddles” (1974) is the ultimate Western spoof. A town where everyone seems to be named Johnson is in the way of the railroad. In order to grab their land, Hedley Lemar, a politically connected man, sends in his henchmen to make the town unlivable. After the sheriff is killed, the town demands a new sheriff from the governor. Hedley convinces him to send the town the first African American sheriff in the West. Bart is a sophisticated urbanite who will have some difficulty winning over the townspeople. Directed by Mel Brooks and starring Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, this comedy was nominated for three Academy Awards, and is considered one of the great American comedies, coming in at number six on “AFI’s 100 Years...100 Laughs” list. Brooks appears in multiple supporting roles, including Governor William J. Le Petomane and a Yiddish-speaking Indian chief. The film is the fourth in this fall-winter’s Adult Education Committee film/discussion series. Temple Israel is located at 475 Grove
Street. For more information, call (201) 444-9320 or visit www.synagogue.org. Trash/recycling collection change In an effort to provide effective service and safe conditions for sanitation employees during ice and storm conditions the Village of Ridgewood has implemented a new policy. When snow and ice are forecast for a scheduled sanitation pickup day, affected residents are to bring their garbage/recyclables cans to the curb for collection. Ridgewood staff will pick up garbage/ recyclables at the curb on snow days or in icy conditions. A snow day is when snow has been falling and the driveway areas are covered. Icy conditions are when ice is present on driveways and sidewalks. Residents’ support of this plan is appreciated. This weather related adjustment will help with service and ensure safety for village employees. Concert series continues Baritone Vladimir Lapin and pianist Janet Montroy will perform a program of Russian Romances and popular Broadway music on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 4 p.m. at Christ Church, 105 Cottage Place, Ridgewood.
