The Waldwick Police Department has arrested a 40-year-old Newark resident and charged him with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, and one count of criminal attempt to commit burglary. The arrest, which took place Dec. 22, was a result of an investigation into recent burglaries and an attempted burglary in the area of Nordham Street. Additional charges were filed against the suspect in several other Bergen County communities for burglary and related offenses, and he was remanded to the Bergen County Jail in lieu of bail. Waldwick Detective Sergeant Doug Moore reported that the suspect was first arrested in Rutherford. After speaking with police officers from multiple jurisdictions, he admitted to 21 daytime burglaries throughout Bergen County. Moore said the Waldwick Police Depart-
Newark man arrested in connection with burglaries
ment was investigating an attempted residential burglary which occurred on Dec. 20 and two residential burglaries that occurred on Dec. 21. The residences are located on different streets in the vicinity of Nordham Street. The incidents took place during daytime hours. In the Dec. 20 attempted burglary, the front door of a Lincoln Place residence was either shouldered or kicked in, but the intruder was startled by a dog in the residence and did not go inside. Moore said two incidents were reported on Dec. 21. At 3 p.m., police learned of a break in on Summit Avenue. The door had been shouldered or kicked in, and a laptop and jewelry were reported stolen. At 6 p.m. the same day, a Grove Street resident reported that the back door of the residence had been shouldered or kicked in and a computer, camera, and jewelry had been stolen. Moore had been working closely with Allendale Police Detective John Mattiace, who determined that a burglary in his jurisdiction and those in Waldwick were related since the same mode of entry was used during the same time of day (between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.). Ho-Ho-Kus, Ridgewood, and Ramsey also reported similar cases in those municipalities. The Allendale incident also included the theft of a car, a fact that later became a key to unraveling the case, Moore noted. Moore and Mattiace began looking through recent burglary cases and found the suspect’s name. While attempting to determine his whereabouts, Moore received a call from Mattiace. The Rutherford police had located the suspect driving the car that had been stolen from Allendale. Moore, Mattiace, and Detective Brian Huth from Ramsey were among those
who went to Rutherford to interview the suspect, who subsequently admitted to multiple burglaries, including some in eastern Bergen County. After interviewing the suspect, Moore said he found it interesting that the man told him he had tried to get into the house on Lincoln Place, but admitted he was more afraid of a dog than an alarm system. Moore noted that the recent arrest was the result of a great deal of effort from multiple communities. “It takes a lot of cooperation talking to people. It was really a team effort,” Moore added. The local police departments teamed up with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department to investigate these incidents. As always, residents are asked to contact the Waldwick Police Department if they observe any suspicious persons or activity.
