February 23, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 Glen Rock Glen Rock High School senior Marissa Clemente recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, by helping equip young women with safety tips and techniques. The Girl Scout Gold Award requires each prospective recipient to complete a leadership project of at least 65 hours. The project should reflect the Scout’s passions and interests and fulfill a need in the community. Clemente’s project focused on helping teens feel safe and prepared for emergency situations. “A few years ago, an intruder broke into our house while my brother and I were home alone,” Clemente noted. “Ever since that incident, I’ve wanted to help young women stay safe in dangerous situations.” Clemente ran a workshop for 50 girls, ages 11 to 17, at Glen Rock High School. She coordinated appearances by guest speakers, including a police officer, a physical education teacher, and a self-defense instructor. Participants learned key safety tips and techniques. In addition, Clemente provided local newspapers with information and safety tips so she could reach more teens and young women. “I was able to face a painful memory and put a positive spin on it,” Clemente said. “Girl Scouting has provided me with leadership experience, organizational skills, and Teen faces past to keep teens safe, earns Gold Award opportunities for community service that will help me succeed personally and professionally.” The Gold Award winner has been a Girl Scout since first grade and is currently a member of Troop 1068. At school, she participates in National Honor Society, Interact Club (a community service group), and is on the Teen Advisory Board for the Glen Rock Public Library. She plans to attend college next year to study graphic design and photography. The Girl Scout Gold Award combines leadership development, career exploration, and community service. Within Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, 12 percent of eligible girls earn their Girl Scout Gold Award, compared to the national average of six percent.
