A pared-down supervisory salary ordinance will be heard for probable adoption by the Ridgewood Council on March 9. The ordinance was trimmed after residents and some council members objected to a proposed retroactive two percent raise for 2010. The department supervisor ordinance as re-introduced no longer includes the retroactive increase for 2010, a year when Ridgewood cut 34 positions, and all police officers took one-day-a-month unpaid furloughs to save the jobs of two junior patrolmen, who had been slated for layoffs to save money. The supervisors, however, will receive a two percent increase for 2011 and a two percent increase for 2012. The supervisors will also contribute $20 a paycheck toward their own health benefits, and will pay a percentage of their salaries toward health benefits as mandated by the state in 2012. The salaries are listed in minimum-to-maximum Retroactive pay increases trimmed ranges. Those ranges include $40,344 to $57,078 for the recreation supervisor and $83,926 to $98,922 for the water treatment plant supervisor. Most of the 15 salaries on the supervisory list are expected to top out at close to $80,000 by 2012. Leonard Eisen, a resident who frequently speaks at council meetings, had expressed concern regarding the two percent increases stipulated in the original draft of the ordinance, pointing out that people in lower salary ranges were being laid off simply because of financial factors at a time when outside jobs are difficult to find. Council members rejected the original draft and sent it back to the drawing board. The elimination of any increases in the year of austerity were seen as a concession to the fact that some employees had been terminated and others had been persuaded to take early retirements or switch to a part-time status.
