February 23, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Glen Rock School board votes 7-0 to pursue outsourcing by John Koster The Glen Rock Board of Education has voted 7-0 to pursue outsourcing of some school services, and may have bid specifications out this week. The board will reportedly attempt to save $1 million by outsourcing selected services that were previously carried out by school district employees. Exact figures were not available at press time, but more than 60 jobs – including those of instructional aides, custodial workers, and administrative workers – might have to be dropped from the organizational table and filled by private-sector firms whose workers are generally paid less than those directly employed by the school district. A number of districts in Northwest Bergen County, including Ridgewood and the Wyckoff K-8 system, have outsourced custodial or food-service functions in recent years because of budgetary pressure. Meetings of the Glen Rock Education Association reportedly failed to produce measures that could have prevented outsourcing to meet the state’s two percent budget cap. The cap is widely opposed by teachers and some residents, and hailed by others as overdue, or not stringent enough. After the board’s vote to support outsourcing, School Business Administrator Michael Rinderknecht was authorized to begin specifications for bids on some services other than union teaching and administration, which could cover the $1 million budget deficit. Some residents were outspoken in their opposition to outsourcing, and especially criticized the board of education’s decision to outsource teachers’ aide jobs, frequently filled by local women whose youngest children are now back in school. Other residents have advocated for tighter control of school expenses. The Glen Rock Police Department is investigating the theft of a tire valued at $250. A resident of Broad Street reported that the right rear tire had been stolen on Feb. 11. Police also arrested a number of motorists on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. On Feb. 10, Patrolman Michael Trover arrested a 19-year-old Waldwick man on charges of driving while intoxicated, possession of narcotics, and possession of narcotics paraphernalia. The man’s car was Police log arrests for DWI impounded. A 19-year-old passenger in the vehicle was arrested for possession of heroin and carrying a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. Also on Feb. 10, Patrolman Robert Surdyka arrested a 45-year-old Ridgewood woman for DWI in a school zone, careless driving, and failure to keep right. Her vehicle was impounded. On Feb. 13, Patrolman Murray Yang arrested a 32-year-old Paramus man for DWI, reckless driving, and failure to keep to the right. 304 S.
