She is survived by her daughters Michele Aleixo of Patchogue, New York, Lisa Bernt of Belmont, Massachusetts, and Maria Anzalone of Ridgewood, 10 grandchildren, and her brother Richard Ricciardi of Clifton. She was predeceased by her husband Leo J. Bernt, her son Harold Metcalf, and her daughter Jacqueline Scicluna. Arrangements were made by the Olthuis Funeral Home in Midland Park. Karen Ferrari of Oakland, formerly of Glen Rock, died Feb. 14. She was 43. She was an accomplished artist and a dedicated teacher. She is survived by her husband Robert, her children Michael and Justin, her parents David Coote and Else Eisenberg, and her sister Sandi Trombino. Donald William Hagedorn of Mahwah died Feb. 13. He was 71. He was a 1957 graduate of Eastern Christian Schools. He received his BS in 1961, MS in 1963, and doctorate in engineering science at Newark College of Engineering, now known as New Jersey Institute of Technology. For 34 years, he was a process development engineer with American Cyanamid, where he received three patents and became lead process engineer for the design of two herbicide formulation facilities and two herbicide syntheses factories. He was a charter member of Flanders Valley Christian Reformed Church in Flanders, where he served as an elder and taught Sunday school for 10 years. He also served as an elder at Franklin Lakes Christian Reformed Church. He is survived by his wife Martina, his children David William Hagedorn of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Donna Beth Bellavia of Mahwah, and Daniel James Hagedorn of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, five grandchildren, and his sisters Ruth Knyfd of Midland Park and Dorothy Vander Gutche of Hudsonville, Michigan. Catherine M. Leesman of Franklin Lakes died Feb. 15. She was 92. Before retiring, she was a coordinator for the Curtis Wright Corporation in Wood-Ridge. She was a member of the Franklin Lakes Seniors. She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Josephine (Tanis) Leesman. Lillis, nee Tully, of Saddle River, formerly of Cresskill and Closter, died Feb. 13. She was 89. Before marrying, she worked for J.P. Maguire New York City. She later worked for Allyn & Bacon publishers. She was a member of Saint Mary’s R.C. Church Closter and Saint Therese R.C. Church in Cresskill. She had been a member of the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and the Saint Mary’s Choir. She is survived by her children Marcella Guilford of Belmont, California, Catherine Adrion of Hillsdale, Cecilia O’Donnell of Allendale, and Stephen of Ridgewood, 10 grandchildren, and three nieces. He was the owner of Art Carpentry in Wyckoff for many years. Before retiring, he was the Ingeborg Rennert Professor of Jewish Studies at Barnard College, where he was employed since 1980. He received a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College, a master’s from Brandeis University, and a Ph.D. Catherine M. Lillis from Yale University. Mary Elizabeth Schmitz of Midland Park, formerly of Closter, died Feb. 2. She was 94. She is survived by her sons Robert D. Schmitz, Ronald A. Schmitz, and Richard W. Schmitz, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Florence Martha Storms McAlevey of Wyckoff, formerly of Hasbrouck Heights, Fair Lawn, and Toms River, died Feb. 5. She was 91. She attended the Paterson General Hospital School of Nursing and received her degree as a registered nurse. Her nursing career was spent at Paterson General Hospital, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, and Hackensack University Medical Center. She had been a volunteer at local nursing homes. She is survived by her children James of Wyckoff and Carol Troy of Hingham, Massachusetts, three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband James J. He was a builder and contractor for over 55 years. He was the quarterback and vice president of the Class of 1950 at Ramsey High School. He attended Montclair State University. He is survived by his children Richard of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Craig of Hudson, Ohio, and Susan Bavagnoli of Wyckoff, eight grandchildren, his friend Marian Dunn, and his siblings Gary Voorman of Upland, California, Alida June Elwood, and Doris Malefyte, both of Canajoharie, New York.
