Glen Rock
Bernadette O’Brien, 80-year old resident of Glen Rock, has been selected by more than 4,000 people across the country to win Centrum Vitamins’ (Pfizer) “America’s Most Amazingly Energized Woman” contest. O’Brien is the popular AquaCore Dynamics Instructor in Glen Rock’s Community School (at the Glen Rock Municipal Pool) and at the YMHA of North Jersey in Wayne. O’Brien was originally selected as one of five finalists from more than 700 entries submitted from all across the country. She was nominated by members of her AquaCore Dynamics class after one member, Glen Rock resident Bonnie Sirower, heard about the contest on WCBS 880 NewsRadio at the beginning of December. Those who nominated O’Brien were asked for the nominee’s secrets to enjoying life and love to the fullest during the holidays. The contest was intended to celebrate a woman who does it all with a smile on her face. Other finalists included a woman whose husband is now serving in the U.S. Army overseas and a woman who is battling cancer.
O’Brien is America’s Most Amazingly Energized Woman
As the grand prize winner, O’Brien will receive a $3,000 gift certificate to an organization that will allow her to enjoy experiences, such as cooking classes, and enjoy adventures that include taking a helicopter ride. Before she retired, O’Brien was principal of PS 9 in New York City. Since her retirement, she has become a physical instruction teacher. About 40 faithful students take her classes in water aerobics twice a week at the YMHA in Wayne or in the Glen Rock Pool in the summer. In addition, she teaches yoga and tai chi in the water once a week, and participates in three additional water aerobics classes at the YMHA every week, except during the winter and early spring. She even has a brown belt in karate. O’Brien recently received certification as an advanced fitness instructor. The next oldest person to her taking that exam was only 29. She is a dedicated member of the Glen Rock Red Hat Society, and a devoted grandmother. She is currently learning new water aerobics techniques from her mentor.
Parade committee seeks prizes, participation
The Glen Rock Independence Day Parade Committee is seeking prizes for its fundraiser to help underwrite the cost of this year’s parade. Generous donations from local businesses, organizations, and residents have always helped fund the parade. This year, the there will be similar prizes with the possibility of an underwater digital camera and a painting donated by a Glen Rock artist. The committee encourages community members, organizations, neighborhood groups, and children’s organizations to consider entering a float in the parade. This year’s theme will be “Glen Rock: 117 Years of History.” For more information about prize donations or float details, contact the committee at glenrockparade@gmail. com.
