Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • February 16, 2011 The Ridgewood YMCA, in cooperation with The Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation, is now offering F.I.T Together at the YMCA, and Danny’s Red Ball Weekend at Camp Bernie. Both programs benefit adolescents and young adults living with autism spectrum disorders. F.I.T. Together at the YMCA is a fitness independence training program for youth and young adults ages 16 through 30. The program incorporates a small group step aerobics exercise class specifically designed to improve the participants’ fitness, coordination, socialization, self-confidence, and 4-29-09 karen/janine independence. Each participant is paired with a volunteer peer mentor for support EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) and encouragement. 3 x .75Gallanty, executive director at the Julie YMCA, said the program was launched in 2009, and is already considered a success. “It’s very rewarding to see the progress each participant makes and the bonds they develop with their volunteer mentors,” Gallanty said. F.I.T Together meets Feb. 21 through April 17 on Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m., and Fridays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Foundation offers adult autism programs at YMCA Ridgewood YMCA’s 12 Oak Street branch. Danny’s Red Ball Weekend at YMCA Camp Bernie is a special camping weekend for adolescents and adults with ASD and their families. The weekend will include hiking, arts and crafts, and sports, all specially designed to include parents and/or guardians and siblings. Danny’s Red Ball Weekend will be held March 5 and 6 at YMCA Camp Bernie, a branch of the Ridgewood YMCA. The camp is located on 275 acres in the Schooley Mountains near Port Murray.
