February 16, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 23 Ridgewood Notes Author to speak at Family Fun Day The Ridgewood Public Library will host Family Fun Day on Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m. Janet Elder, author of “Huck: The Remarkable True Story of How One Lost Puppy Taught a Family – and a Whole Town – about Hope and Happy Endings,” will discuss the story of her beloved Huck and the unique role of animals in humans’ lives. A book signing and visit with Huck will follow. Books will be available for sale at the event, or may be pre-ordered by calling (201) 445-0726. The event is sponsored by Friends of the Ridgewood Library and is free for Ridgewood Library cardholders and KidsCard holders. The ticket price for all others is $5. Adult art instruction offered The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer adult art instruction classes at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue. Watercolors with Lisa Miller will meet on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. beginning March 16. Acrylics with Sandi Chanoch will meet on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning March 9. Explore Science: Space & Rocketry for children in kindergarten through grade three will meet on Mondays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning March 14. Students will create their own glow in the dark solar system while learning about the planets. They will also create a take home space age crystal. The children also learn about rocket aerodynamics and fuel through an air rocket launcher and a safe chemical based launcher. The cost for the five-week session is $80. Abrakadoodle’s Canvas Painting for children in kindergarten and first grade will meet on Wednesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning March 9.Abrakadoodle will take young painters on a journey to explore painting on canvas. Each week, participants will explore a different artist and his or her style. Students will experiment with painting on a variety of canvas surfaces. The cost is $100 for six classes. All materials are included. Nature in the Village with New Jersey Audubon is for children in kindergarten through grade two. Sessions will meet on Thursdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. beginning March 10. Spring preschool classes set Ridgewood Parks and Recreation has planned a variety of spring classes that will meet at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue. Happy Feet Dance Instruction for children ages three through five will meet on Mondays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. beginning March 14. This class offers an introduction to basic ballet positions. The cost is $60 for the six-week session. Formal dance attire is not necessary. My First Art Class with Abrakadoodle for children ages 20 to 42 months with a caregiver will be held on Tuesdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. beginning March 8. Caregivers join little ones to explore painting, drawing, sculpting, reading, and playing art games. Activities are designed to provide opportunities to touch, feel, hear and see, while building fine motor skills, language, creativity, and cognitive skills. The cost is $110 for the six-week session which includes all safe, non-toxic Crayola materials. Mini Doodler Mix It Up with Abrakadoodle for children ages three though five is planned for Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. beginning March 9. This art class focuses on fun while building self-confidence and freedom of expression. This is a mixed media class that includes painting, printing, sculpting, collage making, and more. The cost is $110 for the six-week session and includes all materials. Happy Piano for children ages three though five will meet on Thursdays for 30-minute sessions between 1 and 2:30 p.m. beginning March 10. Students will learn the basics of music theory and how to play familiar songs on the piano. Educational songs, props, and teaching aids all make learning fun. Each child is provided with a keyboard to use in class. The cost is $110 for the six-week session. An additional once-yearly materials kit must be purchased by all new students the first day of class. Guild to discuss Reformation Tom Marsden, pastor at Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church will present “Footprints of the Reformation in Germany” at the March 2 meeting of the Women’s Guild. The program will begin at 1:15 p.m. and will be held in the church’s barrier-free education building at 660 East Glen Avenue. The public is welcome. Through photographs and stories of a group trip to Germany, Marsden and others will share highlights of visits to many of the key cities and sites where significant events took place during the time of the Reformation, centering on Martin Luther. Apart from that “Faith Heritage Tour,” the group attended the famous Passion Play, which has been presented every 10 years since 1634 in the small, picturesque southern Bavarian town of Oberammergau. OLMC MOMs to host events The OLMC MOMs at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will host a bowling fundraiser to support The Nurturing Place on Sunday, March 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Brunswick Lanes, Fair Lawn. The cost is $13.50 per family member. Children under age four will be admitted free. Included will be two hours of bowling, rental shoes, and pizza and drinks for each family. The group asks each family to add a voluntary donation amount to the total price and/or bring one of the following items: a package of diapers, wipes, pack of paper towels, box of Cheerios, or baby food. Art Institute offers ‘The Permanent Collection’ The Ridgewood Art Institute will sponsor “The Permanent Collection: A Historic Tribute to the Ridgewood Art Institute,” Feb. 20 through March 20 at its 12 East Glen Avenue location. The exhibit will be a celebration of the institute’s philosophy and history. Guests are invited to view art and information that illustrates the central place the Ridgewood Art Institute has had in community arts since its inception in 1935. A reception will be held on Thursday, March 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. (Snow date: March 10.) Regular exhibit hours will be Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and during classes.
