We currently have 17 families who require eight to 10 bags of food every month. Please help us fill our pantry. When you go grocery shopping and something non-perishable is on sale, please buy some extra items and drop them off at our outreach center. Our families will be appreciative. ECF uses the community’s contributions to support the costs associated with providing free services to New Jersey children who have cancer. Approximately 70 cents from every dollar goes towards direct care for our families. It’s not possible to do all the fundraising ourselves, so we appreciate it when others help us. Please understand that if the family’s life is too hectic to write a thank you, we hear from their case workers and the volunteers how thrilled they are. We thank you on behalf of all of these families, and urge you to continue to help us help them. Help Kent and his family: Kent is a young boy of four who was diagnosed with leukemia in September. He is currently in Columbia University Hospital after being transferred from Saint Joseph’s in Paterson where his family lives. Kent has been in a coma for over a month and his health is not improving. He lives with his mom and three siblings, including two sisters, ages seven and five, and a three-year-old brother. His parents are divorced. Kent’s mom feels it’s very important for her to be with her son every day at the hospital. Each morning, she gets her other children ready, drops them off at school and takes public transportation to New York City to spend a few hours with Kent, before hurrying back to Paterson to pick up her other kids from school. Kent’s mom is unable to work due to this grueling schedule and taking care of her children’s needs. She also has very little family support in the area, and there is no one to watch the children in the evenings or on weekends. She is extremely worried about her other children, who have started to show challenging behaviors due to their concern over their brother and the stressful situation. Kent’s mother finds it difficult to help with homework and do regular “fun” activities with her other children because she is often exhausted and preoccupied. She tries her best to protect them and not to worry them too much, and generally does not take them with her to the hospital. This family is in a very difficult financial situation and is unable to afford much more than the very basics. The extra costs of commuting to the hospital every day are taking a toll. Kent’s mom really wishes for her other children to be able to attend some type of after school club or activity to help keep them occupied, have fun, and get help with homework. She is currently looking into resources in the Paterson area, but they cost money. Any information regarding after school programs that may consider a sliding fee or waiving the fee would be welcome. This family could also use gift cards to activities to enjoy together, or to help buy necessary household items and groceries. Financial assistance would help Kent’s mother offset some of the expenses associated with her commute to New York City. You can help in a variety of ways. Turn your next gathering or event into a fundraiser by asking guests to bring checks, grocery store gift cards, or non-perishable foods for our families. Your efforts help us to help families like Kent’s in many ways, including sending a caseworker to visit the families at home or in the hospital. Kids can get involved with fundraising, too. Please remember that we do not charge anything for our services. We rely on you! If you have a few hours a week to spare, consider becoming a volunteer or just stop by and see what ECF is all about. Leslie Schifrien, M.S., R.D., C.D.E., dietitian, Valley Home Care will discuss the growing diagnosis of “pre-diabetes,” a condition in which a person’s blood glucose level is higher than normal but not yet high enough to be called diabetes, and how to prevent becoming a statistic.
