Liman will present “The Catskill House and the World around It.” This film tells the story of America’s first mountaintop hotel, romantic tourism of the region, the Hudson River School of Art, and Catskill Mountain music. Gallagher to perform for charity Children’s entertainer Kurt Gallagher will perform on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m. The program will be held in Fellowship Hall at the Community Church of Glen Rock. The concert will benefit The Glen Rock Co-Operative School’s Jean Brennan Scholarship Fund. Gallagher, an innovative performer, gets his audience moving and laughing. Learn about bees and beekeeping Brian Rowe, of Douglas Farms, and third vice president of New Jersey Beekeepers Association (NJBA) will present a talk, “Italians to Buckfast: Bee Types and Their Characteristics” at the Northeast Beekeepers Association of New Jersey meeting Friday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m., 687 South Maple Avenue, Glen Rock. Glen Rock Live concert set The Scott DeCarlo Six plans to put the “rock” back in Glen Rock, when they take the stage on Saturday, March 26, at 8:30 p.m., at the Glen Rock Jewish Center. A portion of proceeds from the concert will benefit AutismNJ, a non-profit agency that provides information and advocacy for families affected by autism. The Scott DeCarlo Six features lead singer Scott DeCarlo, Glen Rock resident Sam Fishman on drums, and Jason Krebs on keyboards. The band, which has been together for the past two years, has played at Six Flags Great Adventure, The Bitter End, and Mexicali Live. Opening acts will include the band Soft Serve and musician Matt Roy. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for anyone age 18 years and under, with advance purchase. Relay for Life ‘Kick-off Party’ scheduled On Feb. 9, local residents are invited to a Relay for Life “Kick-off Party.” This event will be held at Glen Rock High School, 400 Hamilton Avenue, Glen Rock at 7 p.m. All are welcome to learn how they can make a difference in the fight against cancer by participating in the American Cancer Society’s 2011 Relay for Life. This overnight fundraiser celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those lost to the disease, and gives everyone a chance to fight back. Participants walk or run laps around a track relay style to raise money for research and American Cancer Society programs. During the relay, participating teams also take part in activities that build community spirit and honor loved ones. The 2011 Glen Rock Relay for Life will take place May 14 and 15 at Glen Rock High School. The American Cancer Society encourages everyone to attend the Relay for Life of Glen Rock. Shir Appeal performs concerts Shir Appeal, the co-ed Jewish a cappella group based at Tufts University, will perform two concerts on Saturday, Feb. 12 at the Glen Rock Jewish Center. A “kiddush show,” a short program for children and families, will be held at 11:30 a.m. following Shabbat services. This performance is free of charge for all. At 8 p.m., there will be a full-length performance followed by coffee and dessert. This show is free for GRJC Nursery School families; member families; and Men’s Club, Movin’ On, and 50+ Club members. Admission is $10 per adult for all others. Shir Appeal has almost 20 years of experience, singing along the spectrum of Jewish music, from Hebrew pop, Israeli rock, and traditional/liturgical melodies to English songs with Jewish themes. Trips planned for seniors On March 23, the Glen Rock Seniors will travel to the Landmark in East Rutherford to hear the Jersey Dreamers perform the music of Glen Miller, Barry Manilow, Louie Prima, and others. Learn about lilacs Master Gardener Dr. Edith Wallace will present an illustrated program, “Lovely Lilacs: From Skylands to Your Garden,” to the Glen Rock Garden Club on Tuesday, Feb 15 at 7:45 p.m. Dr. Wallace will discuss selecting, planting, and caring for lilacs. She is a biology professor emeritus at William Paterson University, and has been co-coordinator of the Lilac Garden Restoration Project at the New Jersey Botanical Gardens/Skylands for 13 years. She is certified in three different aspects of plant science by the New York Botanical Garden Department of Continuing Education. The program, which is open to the public, will be held in the Glen Rock Municipal Annex at 678 Maple Avenue. Refreshments will be served. ESL offered at library The Glen Rock Library’s two ESL (English as a Second Language) discussion groups meet each week through June.
