Twenty-six members of Ridgewood High School’s 2009-10 Solar Cell Team recently received certificates in recognition of the school’s successful participation in the National Science Foundation’s GK12 program last year. Alfred Zeisler, the NSF GK12 program coordinator for Stevens Institute of Technology, was present at the award ceremony. The GK12 program brought cutting-edge nanotechnology to RHS. Nanotechnology, which concerns a world of ultra-small dimensions, is changing lives in various ways, including cell phones, iPods, advances in medicine, solar cells, and bullet proof vests. The 2009-10 team, led by teachers Dr. Lillian Labowsky

and Mr. Jamie Tuohey-Kay, launched a Nanocrystalline Solar Cell project that converted sunlight to electricity with the dye extracted from berries. The project was presented at the 2010 Super Science Saturday fair. Dr. Labowsky and Dr. Harold Nelson are this year’s GK12 teachers. The goal for 2010-11 is to create an effi-
cient energy train that couples nanocyrstalline solar cells with a water splitter. The electrical energy harnessed from the nanocrystalline solar cell powers the water splitter to produce the simplest and greenest of fuels: pure hydrogen. The results will be presented at the upcoming Super Science Saturday.
Does Your Child Want to Be a Designer?
We can teach her the fundamentals of sewing to unleash her creativity. She can model the garments she’s made at our Annual Fashion Show in June. June
