Glen Rock
On Feb. 9, local residents are invited to join the American Cancer Society and their friends and neighbors in Glen Rock to learn how they can make a difference in the fight against cancer by participating in the 2011 Relay for Life. A “Kick-off Party” will be held at Glen Rock High School, 400 Hamilton Avenue, Glen Rock, at 7 p.m. Relay for Life is an overnight fundraiser that celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those lost to the disease, and gives everyone a change to fight back. Participants walk or run laps around a track relay style to raise money for research and American Cancer Society programs. During the relay, participating teams also take part in activities that build community spirit and honor loved ones. This year, Glen Rock’s Relay for Life will take place May 14 and 15 at Glen Rock High School. The relay began in 1985 with a man who had lost his wife to cancer. Since that time, the relay has grown to include over 5,000 communities. This will be the ninth year Glen Rock has been involved in relay activities. The relay brings the community together in a unified effort to fight cancer and symbolizes the fight that cancer patients must face after they are diagnosed. The light and the darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while he or she is undergoing treatment. During Relay for Life, individuals and teams camp out, dance, and take turns walking or running. At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminaria around the track to

honor cancer survivors and to remember those lost. The timing of each event is symbolic, and links the relay participants’ experiences to those of cancer patients. The relay begins as the sun is starting to set. This coming darkness symbolizes the time a person is diagnosed with cancer. As night settles in, it gets colder and darker, just as the emotions of the cancer patient do. The period between 1 and 2 a.m. represents the time when treatments begin. People become exhausted or sick, and may think about giving up. The rising sun represents the end of treatment for the cancer patient. He or she can
see the light at the end of the tunnel and knows that life will go on. The morning light brings on a new day full of life and excitement for new beginnings. Everyone has a personal reason to care about the fight against cancer. The American Cancer Society encourages anyone wishing to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, or pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to attend the Relay for Life of Glen Rock. Glen Rock officials will be mulling the suggestions they received last week from an audience of 15 to 20 residents as they considered last-minute changes to the plans to reconfigure the recycling area off Doremus Avenue. Glen Rock Borough Administrator Lenora Benjamin said that Borough Engineer Mike DeSena and Director of Public Works Director Bob Tiserio will discuss the recent suggestions with the council members before the plans are finalized for bidding at a date not yet announced. The project had been budgeted at about $400,000 and is expected to add 120 parking spaces by consolidating the recycling fixtures. A building for the staff and barrier-free

restroom facilities for the field will also be part of the new recycling center. Benjamin said the meeting was useful but did not comment on what suggestions might be incorporated pending evaluations from the engineer and DPW. Located across Dorermus Avenue from a residential neighborhood of well-maintained one-family homes, the recycling area accepts three colors of glass, most types of plastic, paper and newsprint, and allows residents with stickers to pick up free topsoil and mulch.
