Page 10 THE VILLADOM TIMES Area II • February 2, 2011 WICS announce food collection The Glen Rock Women in Community Service will sponsor its annual “Have a Heart, Help the Hungry” food collection on Saturday, Feb. 5 and Sunday, Feb. 6 at Kilroy’s Wonder Market at 288 Rock Road in Glen Rock. This drive benefits clients of the Center for Food Action and Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. Donations of non-perishable food and personal care items will be collected from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The Center for Food Action serves over 1000 Bergen County families who rely on their organization for food and personal care items and rental and utility assistance. Emmanuel Cancer Foundation provides financial and emotional support to local families who have a child stricken with cancer. These organizations have benefited greatly from the WICS food collections over the last several years. Each drive has resulted in the collection of 200 to 250 bags of food that are delivered by volunteers to the organizations for distribution to their clients. Due to the current economic situation, the needs of these organizations are at very high levels. The Glen Rock Women in Community Service has conducted two food drives yearly in February and June for the past several years. Kilroy’s will identify needed items by placing “Food Drive: Have a Heart” labels near the products on the shelves. WICS and the volunteers at CFA and ECF are thankful for the support they receive from the community and the large amount of food and personal care items donated to help those in need. For those who would like to make a financial donation, a tax-deductible contribution may be sent to: Glen Rock Women in Community Service, P.O. Box 921, Glen Rock, NJ 07452. Ridgewood High School recently held Mexico Day. Students conducted research and made PowerPoint presentations on the country, and then continued their cultural exploration in the food lab, where students selected a menu and cooked dishes that reflected the culture they explored. The celebration was enhanced by appropriate costumes, music, flatware, and cultural symbols. The Mexico Day menu included: appetizers - salsa, guacamole, and tortilla chips; main dish - beef tacos; side dish - potato cakes; dessert - churro; and beverage - piña coladas.
