RHS Annual Citrus Sale coming up The Ridgewood High School Band will once again host its Citrus Sale. Band members will be knocking on Ridgewood doors on Sunday, Jan. 8 selling California navel oranges and tangy and sweet Florida red grapefruits. The oranges and grapefruits are sold in 20 pound cases; the Citrus Sampler includes 24 oranges and 12 grapefruits; and the Fresh Medley is a box of 10 oranges, six apples, and six pears. Each selection sells for $25. Proceeds go towards the Ridgewood Band’s trip to California in February, and for the purchase of new instruments and supplies not included in the board of education’s budget. The sale also helps fund scholarships for some of Ridgewood’s graduating seniors. The musicians will leave order forms on the doors of residents who are not at home. Delivery of the fresh fruit is expected in early March. West Side celebrates Christmas West Side Presbyterian Church has announced its schedule of Christmas services. On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, there will be a traditional service of lessons and carols at 4 p.m. The prelude will begin at 3:45 p.m. and the program will include the Brass Choir, the Children and Youth choirs, and handbells. Child care for preschool children is provided free of charge in the nursery. At the 10 p.m. Christmas Eve Communion Service, the Chancel Choir, Westminster Bell Choir, and String Ensemble will perform. The prelude will begin at 9:30 p.m. On Christmas Day, Dec. 25, there will be a 10 a.m. worship service. Please note that child care will not be available. Holiday events at Emmanuel Emmanuel Baptist Church, located on the corner of East Ridgewood Avenue and Hope Street, will celebrate Christmas with the multiple services. On Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, a musical prelude at 7:45 p.m. will be performed before the 8 p.m. service. A Cookie Reception will follow. The Christmas Day service will be held at 10:30 a.m. On New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, Emmanuel will host a Jazz Brunch at 10:30 a.m. with Dave Dallon on the saxophone. All are welcome. MOMs plan first meeting of 2012 OLMC MOMs of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will meet Jan. 4 at 9:15 a.m. in the parish center, 1 Passaic Street in Ridgewood. Guest speaker Paula Metzger, MSW, LCSW, will address the group. Metzger brings 18 years of pastoral counseling experience to her clinical practice with adults, children, couples, and families. Her clinical and pastoral background gives her the opportunity to provide a gentle calming presence and a compassionate understanding to her work with individuals and families who struggle
with managing behavioral issues, anxiety, and depression. She assists children and parents in adjusting to life transitions due to separation and divorce and dealing with loss and grief. MOMs meetings include speakers, group discussions, and interest groups such as book club, recipe club, tennis, playgroups, faith sharing groups and more. Moms of all faiths and ages are welcome. Library announces holiday closings The Ridgewood Public Library will be closed on Dec. 24, 25, 26, and 31 and Jan. 1. Nursery school registration under way The Ridgewood Nursery School and Kindergarten is accepting registration for 2012-13. The school offers a wide variety of programs for toilet trained children who are two years and nine months through five years. The state-certified kindergarten/transitional kindergarten programs are available in three-, four-, or five-day offerings. Flexible hours are available with an extended day from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., a full-day from 9:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., or a half-day from 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. Children may attend three, four, or five days a week. Juried show seeks art entries The Ridgewood Art Institute invites area artists to submit an original work of art to The Ridgewood Art Institute’s 32nd Annual Juried Art Show. The event will be held Jan. 22 through Feb. 5 at the institute, 12 East Glen Avenue in Ridgewood. The event will award over $5,000 in cash and merchandise, with a top prize in the amount of $1,000. Amateur and professional artists will be judged on an equal basis. Participants may submit one original representational work, up to 44 inches framed, that has not previously been shown at the institute. Receiving will be held Jan. 7 from noon to 5 p.m. The show will not accept sculpture or crafts. The entry fee is $25 for members, and $30 non-members. A reception will be held on Jan. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. John Philip Osborne will present a demonstration on Jan. 29 at 1:30 p.m. Infant & Child Safety instruction available The Valley Hospital will offer an Infant & Child Safety class on Wednesday, Dec. 28 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at The Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus. The program will provide awareness of the many potential hazards to infants and children. Topics include car seat safety, poison prevention, childproofing a home, furniture and toy safety, and other areas of concern for new parents. Childcare providers are welcome to register.
Ridgewood Somerville Daisy Troop 5274 recently participated in Operation Goody Bag by coloring brown paper goody bags at Hackensack Supply in Paramus. This student-centered, service-learning project isdedicated to remembering Sept. 11. The mission is to perform tributes remembering those who perished and express appreciation to U.S. military men and women, veterans, and first responders, through the gift of a goody bag. YWCA offers Vacation Day Care The YWCA Bergen County’s Vacation Day program provides full day care from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on designated school holidays. Based at the YWCA’s 112 Oak Street, Ridgewood facility, the program includes trips and activities that are supervised by the YWCA’s trained child care staff. Upcoming dates are Dec. 27 and 28 and will feature bowling and a trip to see the movie “Alvin & the Chipmunks,” plus participation in the YWCA’s Aqua Adventures swim class.
