Courtney Wong, a Glen Rock native and Glen Rock High School graduate, will host the third annual fundraising sale of Guatemalan artisan products on Sunday, Dec. 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Community Church of Glen Rock at 354 Rock Road. The sale will take place in the Fellowship Hall Foyer (Hamilton Avenue entrance) and will benefit Limitless Horizons Ixil, a sustainable community development organization that serves the secluded indigenous Mayan Ixil community of Chajul, Guatemala. A variety of handmade items perfect for holiday gifts will be sold, including woven scarves and bookmarks, bags, jewelry, stuffed animals, and holiday ornaments. This year’s sale will feature new products, including items handwoven by LHI’s students and families. Limitless Horizons Ixil is a US 501(c)3 nonprofit and 4-29-09 karen/janine Guatemalan nongovernmental organization working in partnership with the indigenous Maya Ixil community of EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) Guatemala to create opportunities for empowerment and to 3 x .75 advance sustainable community development. LHI works in the Ixil region of the western highlands of Guatemala, which has maintained its rich Mayan traditions, dress, and language despite being particularly hard hit by the 36-year Guatemalan civil war. It is an area marked by significant poverty and post-war trauma. The community has a cornbased agricultural economy where the average income is $1 to $3 per day and adults struggle daily to feed their families. Less than five percent of children graduate from middle school and 75 percent of the adult population is illiterate. This year, LHI celebrated a huge milestone as its first (continued on page 9)
