Rabbi Sharon Litwin was installed as the associate rabbi of Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center of Ridgewood on Dec. 4. The celebration began with a musical introduction. Temple Israel’s choir sang “Ma Tovu” and students from the Northern New Jersey Jewish Academy performed a selection of songs. NNJJA is a consortium Hebrew school of Temple Israel and Temple Beth Sholom in Fair Lawn; Rabbi Litwin is the school’s director. Reflections and tributes to Rabbi Litwin were then offered by Temple Israel President Denis Vogel, Cantor Caitlin Bromberg, and Rabbi David J. Fine, PhD. The installation’s keynote address was delivered by Rabbi Perry Raphael Rank of Midway Jewish Center in Syosset, New York, and past president of the Rabbinical Assembly, the International Association of Conservative/Masorti Rabbis. The installation concluded with several songs by TAVIM, a Jewish a cappella group with which Rabbi Litwin performs. TAVIM

The Ridgewood Board of Education has approved change orders that saved the district $185,231 on construction and renovation at the George Washington Middle School. The total project with the Bennett Company of Passaic is for $10,848,590, but the recent change orders, when the calculations were completed, saved the district a considerable amount of money on work not deemed necessary, despite

some smaller additions for work that turned up during the construction project. The board agreed to rescind retaining wall replacement estimated at $170,000 due to escalating associated costs, and to deduct an alternative that would have cost $40,000 to provide and install all gymnasium equipment at the Neville Gymnasium at the George Washington Middle School.
The board also received a $5,600 credit for the purchase of “flushometers.” There were, however, two smaller change orders that actually added to the projected expenses: $24,228 to reroute existing roof drains on the storage room, and $6,196 for windows added to the vocal room, window modifications, and a transom.
