December 7, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 23 Ridgewood Notes Holiday donations accepted at the Stable The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department at the Stable will once again serve as a collection center for holiday gifts for those in need. The Stable is located at 259 North Maple Avenue in Ridgewood and is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The last day to donate is Wednesday, Dec. 21. Summaries of the programs taking place at the Stable this month follow. The Toys for Tots program, which is sponsored by the Saddle River Detachment #1211 Marine Corps League, welcomes all new and unwrapped toys and games to make a child’s holiday brighter. Each year, the Mitten Tree is decorated with gloves, scarves, hats, and mittens donated by village residents to benefit local neighbors. New this year, the recreation division, in conjunction with Social Service Association of Ridgewood and Vicinity, will collect food and personal items for the local food pantry. Items needed include canned tuna, boxed cereal, pasta, rice, canned juices, vegetables, soup, fruit, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, and detergent. Flower show trip offered Ridgewood Parks and Recreation is offering gift certificates for its annual trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show. The 2012 exhibit, “Hawaii: Islands of Aloha,” will feature the six islands, home to treasures unlike any other place on earth: tropical flowers, volcanoes, white sand beaches, cliffs, whales, and the Hawaiian culture and traditions. The trip is set for Tuesday, March 6, 2012. The cost of $60 per person includes admission to the show and coach transportation. Participants will be on their own for lunch. The bus will depart from the Graydon Pool parking lot at 8 a.m. and will return at approximately 5:30 p.m. Gift certificates are available at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood. OPRC sets Christmas events All are welcome to join the intergenerational and interfaith Christmas events at Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church. On Dec. 11, the 10 a.m. service will feature the Sunday school children’s pageant based on the 12 Days of Christmas. At 3 p.m. on Dec. 11, children, friends, and guests from the community, and the congregation are invited to the Second Annual Cookie Concert. OPRC Music Director and organist Stewart Holmes, a teacher at Ridge School, will play seasonal music and offer a demonstration of the workings of the Nevin pipe organ. The program will include interactive participation. At the conclusion of the program, cookies will be served. Sunday worship on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. will be based on selections from “Kneeling in Bethlehem,” a book by Ann Weems. OPRC’s 21-voice Chancel Choir, conducted by Stewart Holmes will sing many carols of the season, surrounded by selections from the Weems book, used for quiet reflection. On Christmas Eve, OPRC Pastor Rev. Tom Marsden, will preside at a Family Service at 5:30 p.m., followed by an 11 p.m. traditional Candlelight Service of lessons and carols. This service will also feature instrumentalists and the Chancel Choir. The Christmas Day service will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 25. The church is located at 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17 South. Participants will build models and fly them outdoors (weather permitting) at the Aviation and Rocketry Camp offered during the December recess. Students will learn to read plans, make calculations, and work with hobby tools. The program, which is being offered to students in kindergarten through grade five, will be held Dec. 27 and 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Stable, 259 North Maple Avenue. Call (201) 670-5560. Petras to exhibit at gallery The Stable Art Gallery will be presenting “Beki Petras: Retrospective from the ‘50s Onward” throughout December. Petras’ formal training was at the University of Georgia and the New York Art Students’ League. Her work has earned her honors and awards. She has exhibited in national and international shows and galleries, including National Arts Club in New York, Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., the U.S. Senate Office Building, Peale Museum in Baltimore, the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton, and Akhnaton Gallery in Cairo, Egypt. A reception with the artist will be held Dec. 10 from 3 to 5 p.m. All are invited to attend. Boswell to demonstrate pottery techniques Ray Boswell, potter, teacher, and artist, will demonstrate his craft to the MOMs group at Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Dec. 7 at 9:15 a.m. in the parish center, 1 Passaic Street, Ridgewood. Participants will learn how Boswell delicately merges creativity with spirituality for an advent celebration with pottery votives. Attendees are asked to bring a donation for the Nurturing Place. Needed items include diapers in size five and six, small Playtex sippy cups, baby food (stage two and three), Similac advance powder, hand soap, Bactine spray, hand sanitizer, tweezers, sterile eye patches, eye wash saline, 4x4 gauze, and large and small zip-style plastic bags.
