The Village of Ridgewood will hold a Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial Rock in Memorial Park at Van Neste Square for the 12 residents killed at the World Trade Center terrorist attack 10 years ago. Event organizers said the ceremony will be similar to the one held in 2001. During the month of September, an exhibit of “Portraits” will be on display in the Belcher Auditorium at the Ridgewood Public Library. The exhibit honors the memory of each 4-29-09 karen/janine of “Ridgewood’s Twelve” and offers EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) a place for reflection. Photos of the

Ridgewood 2001 Memorial Events will be included in the exhibit. A special video presentation of “Off Balance” will be shown in the Ridgewood Library’s Belcher Auditorium on Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Lynn Needle, her fellow artists, and several Ridgewood firefighters who were involved with the project will introduce the video and will be available after the program to share their thoughts and memories of that fateful day. Ridgewood resident Needle remembers exactly where she was when the first plane hit the World Trade Center on Sept. 11,
9/11 with ceremony, video, ‘Requiem’
2001. Needle, artistic director of Ridgewood-based Art in Motion, was attending a dance class and recalled feeling “off balance,” an uncommon sensation for the professional dancer and choreographer. Little did she know that her loss of equilibrium that day would become the impetus behind her moving homage to 9/11. Working with other Ridgewood performing arts professionals, Needle created a theatrical tribute to the many Ridgewood heroes who rushed to the World Trade Center site to offer assistance. The program premiered in March 2002 at Bergen
Community College’s Ciccone Theater. Portions of the performance were later used in numerous documentaries and news programs about the terrorist attack. Admission is free, and all are welcome. For more information, contact Barbara Hand at (201) 670-5600, extension 125 or bhand@ridgewoodlibrary.org. The library is located at 125 North Maple Avenue. The music community will recognize the Tenth Anniversary of 9/11 with a presentation of Gabriel Faure’s “Requiem.” The performance will take place West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 South Monroe Street, at 4 p.m. on Sept. 11. Various churches in the area, community choral groups, and musicians including Ridgewood Concert Band, Ridgewood Symphony, and baritone soloist Dr. Robert Prowse will participate. This program was first presented after the fall of the towers in 2001.
Ridgewood police officers were able to track a suspected hit-and-run driver to her home in Bergenfield through the help of a witness. She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident where injuries occurred. On Aug. 23 at 12:32 p.m., a witness came to Ridgewood Police Headquarters and described an accident at the corner of East Ridgewood Avenue and Hope Street in which a young girl on a bike was struck by a car. The vehicle left the scene. The police first went to the victim’s house and spoke with her, and then telephoned the motorist, with a license number the witness had supplied to them. The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old Bergenfield woman, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident where an injury had occurred and with other motor vehicle summons offenses. Less than two hours later, the Ridgewood Police Department responded to a report that a vehicle had struck a house on Grove Street. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a wall, a handicapped ramp, and the house before coming to rest against a fence. Police report that the driver appears to have suffered a medical emergency that led to the accident. The driver and a passenger were both transported to Valley Hospital for treatment. On Aug. 17, a Bogert Avenue resident reported that a Rolex watch had been stolen from his home while workers were at the residence with the owner’s knowledge and consent. Two days later, on Aug. 19, an East Ridgewood Avenue business reported that an umbrella and stand that had been left on the sidewalk overnight had been stolen from the front of a building. The same day, an employee of Lencore Leasing reported that 13 vehicles stored in the South Broad Street lot had been entered. Items that were reported stolen included 12 batteries and a navigation system. On Aug. 20, a Franklin Avenue resident reported that he was selling an item on Craig’s List. A purchaser sent the Ridgewood resident two money orders for about $1,800 in excess of the requested price. The purchaser requested that the money beyond the purchase price be wired to England through Western Union. The purchaser sent the money, but the money orders proved to be fraudulent. Police said this particular scam is frequently employed, especially when the items being advertised are somewhat unusual. The Ridgewood Detective Bureau is investigating these cases. J. KOSTER
