Council plans to change parking hours on Walton Street
by John Koster The Ridgewood Village Council will be hearing an ordinance to change some scheduled parking hours on Walton Street at the next public council meeting. The ordinance, if adopted, would delete the use of both sides of Walton Street for four-hour parking and allow four-hour parking on the south/west side of that street from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. from South Maple Avenue to Dayton Street. The public hearing and possible adoption are scheduled for Sept. 14. The council has also introduced an ordinance to approve spending on various capital projects, in some cases with outside assistance. Most of the $3,354,000 ordinance aims at road repair and resurfacing, uses that many residents have favored based on their comments at meetings. Some equipment is also covered in the same ordinance, which will also be heard for probable adoption on Sept. 14. A weapons upgrade and improved body armor for the police department will be considered. Including a $3,900 grant from the State of New Jersey, the total amount to be spent is $14,229. The replacement of radio equipment will cost $10,774. The office of emergency management is seeking $4,269 for equipment, and the office of emergency services is seeking $25,210 toward the cost of a replacement ambulance. Replacement of fire department equipment will include $71,147, an additional $10,164 toward replacement of the fire department SUV, and $10,164 for replacement of an oil/water separator at fire headquarters. The recreation department has applied for $109,529, which would be partly defrayed by contingent approval of a $20,000 Bergen County grant, for items including an inflatable pool slide, renovations to the Somerville tennis courts, and acquisition of park signs. Bergen County has provided a $104,000 grant to cover most of the purchase of a $176,290 pick-up truck with a snowplow and replacement of a gang mower for park maintenance.
Upgrades to the computer systems, Channel 77 upgrades, laptops for council members, and electronic upgrades for police cars are estimated at $90,255. The replacement of a salt truck with a plow and replacement of a second truck with a plow, along with new carpet in the street division office, is estimated at $304,915.

Midland Park is applying for additional New Jersey Department of Transportation funds in the hope of finishing its Greenwood Avenue project with 2010 money. If successful, the borough would then be able to apply for a different project for the 2011 DOT allocation. “The additional 2010 moneys became available recently, and our grant consultants, Capital Alternatives, suggested that we apply so we can do the entire project as originally intended,” explained Borough Administrator Addie Hanna. The funds will allow for the delineation and paving of the park and ride area adjacent to the New Jersey Transit bus station in Wortendyke, which serves five bus lines.

This area, available for resident parking only for about nine cars, is unimproved at the present time and could be expanded to include adjacent property now owned by the New York Susquehanna Railroad. The engineer’s estimate for this part of the project was about $80,000. The town has already been allocated $150,000 for repaving the entire length of Greenwood Avenue from Birch Street to the Wyckoff border. Hanna said that phase of the project will likely be done next month. Greenwood was totally reconstructed with NJDOT funds awarded in 1997 and 1998. The job was completed in two phases because of the cost, which was higher than usual since the project included major drainage work.
