August 24, 2011 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 23 Ridgewood Notes Douglas to discuss ‘Shutter Bug’ mission Scott Douglas will present a program on his “ShutterBug” mission for underprivileged youth to the Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Church on Sept. 7 at 1:15 p.m. The program will be held in the church’s barrier-free education building at 660 East Glen Avenue, Ridgewood. A Christian layman, Douglas is a master photographer and founder of this mission. He will share his unique story of “Shutter-Bug” camera clubs in the New York City area, Uganda, and elsewhere. He is president of Dancker Sellew & Douglas, a furniture dealership. He is a member of Ridgewood’s First Presbyterian Church, and lives in Ho-Ho-Kus and in Lyme, Connecticut. The event has been scheduled from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the clubhouse at 215 West Ridgewood Avenue in Ridgewood. Light fare and beverages will be served. Area women are invited to learn about the club’s mission and events, and to meet club members. The Woman’s Club is a 501c3 organization for women who are at least 18 years of age. The club hosts monthly luncheons/socials, sponsors Meals on Wheels, raises money for local charities, hosts the annual House Tour and Children’s Theater, sponsors Social Service families’ holiday wish lists, and more. Anyone who can not attend the August event is asked to attend the Fall Coffee planned for Sept. 16 at 9:30 a.m. New job seekers’ group forming Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors, a free, peer-led volunteer support group designed to help those actively looking for work, is expanding its reach to Ridgewood, where a newly formed branch will be hosted by the Ridgewood Public Library beginning Sept. 8. Meetings will be held on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the library’s art studio. All job seekers, from recent college graduates to retirees looking to re-enter the workforce, are welcome. Group members assist each other with resume and interview techniques, suggestions for job searches and skill enhancement training, and offer help with personal and professional networking. Golf Outing benefit set The Ridgewood YMCA will hold its 38th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Sept. 19 at the Knickerbocker Country Club in Tenafly. Proceeds from the event will support the Ridgewood YMCA’s Good Works Programs. The event will conclude with the annual Park Avenue BMW Putt-Off Contest. Through its Good Works Programs, the Ridgewood Y meets community needs and serves everyone, regardless of ability to pay. Examples of the Ridgewood Y’s Good Works Programs include Living Strong, Living Well, a strength and conditioning program for cancer patients and survivors; Delay the Disease, a program designed to introduce the benefits of exercise to people with Parkinson’s Disease; and Rainbows, providing peer support for children who have suffered a painful family loss. Registration for the fall session is underway. Classes will run Sept. 12 through Nov. 6. New classes for adults include: A Healthier You, an innovative eight-week lifestyle and fitness program led by an experienced coach. Each week, participants meet with their coach in small groups to learn about nutrition, exercise, and healthy lifestyles. These discussions are complemented by weekly workout sessions, including cardio, wellness, and strength and conditioning. Cardio, Core+ More offers a high-energy cardio workout using basic aerobic steps followed by toning exercises with a focus on the body’s core. New offerings for children are: Sportacular, a sports sampler class for children ages three through five. Each week, the program will feature a new sport. Offerings include soccer, T-ball, basketball, and more. The program is designed to offer kids a great introduction to youth sports. Kidz Kuisine will give budding chefs in the family a chance to have fun in the kitchen as they create healthy snacks and appetizers. Call (201) 444 5600. Swim team tryouts set The Ridgewood YMCA Breakers competitive swim team will hold tryouts on Sept. 6, 8, and 9 at the Ridgewood YMCA on Oak Street in Ridgewood. Tryouts will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Pre-registration is not required. The fee to participate in the tryout is $10. YMCA membership is not required to try out; however, swimmers who are invited to join the Breakers swim team must become Ridgewood YMCA members. Registration will open at 4 p.m. on tryout days. Swimmers age nine through 12 will try out on Sept. 6. Swimmers who are age eight and under will try out on Sept. 8. Sept. 9 will be for swimmers ages 13 and over and make ups. The consortium school’s family workshops and other programming will take place at Temple Beth Sholom. NNJJA will offer formal religious school programs for children in pre-kindergarten through grade seven. Pre-kindergarten through second grade classes are open to children ages three and older for both synagogue members and non-members and will meet weekly on Sunday mornings throughout the school year. Temple Beth Sholom and Temple Israel members and prospective members are encouraged to register their children in third through seventh grades for religious school. These classes will meet twice weekly and provide students with academic and experiential knowledge of Jewish tradition and the customs that are observed at each of the temples. The children learn Hebrew prayer, history, values, and Torah through a variety of educational programming means.
